Inge Wersin-Lantschner (born January 26, 1905 in Innsbruck , † June 16, 1997 in Innsbruck; born Inge Lantschner ) was an Austrian ski racer . She became world champion in downhill , slalom and combined in 1933 and won another three silver medals at world championships in previous years. In 1928 and 1929 she was Austrian downhill champion.

Life

Lantschner was a member of one of the most successful ski families in Austria. Together with her younger siblings Hadwig , Otto , Gustav and Gerhard , she played a key role in international ski competitions in the early 1930s. Since only a few women's races were held at the beginning of her sporting career, she often took part in competitions with her male colleagues, in which she often won. In addition to skiing, she was also an excellent swimmer and enthusiastic mountaineer . She studied sport at the University of Vienna and became a state-certified ski and swimming instructor. She worked as a sports teacher at the University of Graz and gave skiing, swimming and alpine courses.

Lantschner celebrated first successes at the Austrian championships when she won the downhill twice in 1928 and 1929 . In 1930 she was the outstanding runner at the Arlberg-Kandahar races in St. Anton , where she won all three competitions with victories in downhill, slalom and combined. In the winter of 1931, she also won all three races on the Schneeberg and won the downhill from Schladming . At the first World Ski Championships in Mürren , Switzerland , she won the silver medal in slalom behind Britain's Esmé MacKinnon . She was eighth in the descent. After marrying a notary, she started in 1932 under the double name Wersin-Lantschner. At the World Championships in Cortina d'Ampezzo in 1932 , she won the silver medal in the downhill behind the South Tyrolean Paula Wiesinger and, with sixth place in the slalom, also the silver medal in the combination.

Wersin-Lantschner celebrated the greatest success of her career in 1933 when the world championship was held in her home town of Innsbruck. She was the first female athlete to win the gold medal in all three competitions. In downhill she left second-placed Swiss Nini Zogg behind for more than 20 seconds, and in slalom she also crossed the finish line with an advantage of almost eight seconds over Briton Helen Boughton-Leigh , with which she also won the combination.

At the height of her career, Wersin-Lantschner decided to take care of her private life and only started occasionally in races. After the birth of her first child, she ended her career entirely.
