The Col d'Izoard is a 2,360 meter high mountain pass in the French Alps , department of Hautes-Alpes and is the third highest pass in the Route des Grandes Alpes .

The road connects Briançon and the Guil Valley . In terms of traffic, the pass is of little importance, as the alternative route through the Durance valley is shorter and better developed.

From the north, the road, which has a continuously marked cycle lane, leads through the valley of the Cerveyette to the village of Saint Michel and on through an alpine high valley. When you enter the forest, a winding route begins that emerges from the forest shortly before the Refuge Napoléon and overcomes the last few meters in wide loops. On the south side follows the Casse Déserte , the "deserted scree", a dry weathered landscape with rubble heaps and rock needles. The road overcomes the valley step with further serpentines to the village of Brunissard and continues to descend there with a very steep gradient without major curves. Near the village of Château-Queyras , the road meets the route from the Col Agnel . Further down the valley towards Guillestre you will pass the “ Combe du Queyras ” gorge .

Both climbs are equipped with special signs for cyclists at intervals of one kilometer .

Tour de France

The pass was included in the Tour de France program 35 times (as of July 2014) , the first time in 1922. Philippe Thys was the first to cross the Tour de France . A small museum at the top of the pass is dedicated to the cycling history of the pass. The museum has mostly been closed since 2009. In the 2017 Tour de France , Warren Barguil won the 18th stage , which led from Briançon to the Col d'Izoard. A few hours earlier had with women Annemiek van Vleuten under La Course by Le Tour de France can triumph on the Izoard.
