Jörg Hoffmann (born January 29, 1970 in Schwedt / Oder ) is a former German swimmer who competed for the GDR until 1990 .

Career

At the 1991 World Championships in Perth Hoffmann was world champion over 400 m and, with a world record time of 14: 50.36 min, over 1500 m freestyle . He was also third at the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona in the 1500 m freestyle. In Barcelona he was the top favorite for the long distance, but he could not meet his high expectations. He also achieved four European titles in a row in the 1500 m freestyle (1989, 1991, 1993, 1995).

Since 2005 he has been working as a trainer at the Olympic base in Potsdam . Hoffmann has been successfully looking after the top group there for years and trains a. a. the swimmers Yannick Lebherz , Christian Diener , Carl Louis Schwarz and Tim-Thorben Suck , as well as the young talents Sonnele Öztürk and Eric Friese .

In October 2016, Jörg Hoffmann also took on the Paralympic swimmer Maike Naomi Schnittger in his group.

Jörg Hoffmann was the first German swimmer to swim the 1500 m under 15 minutes, and he was the first swimmer to swim under a minute every 100 m.

doping

During his time in the GDR, he was given the anabolic Oral-Turinabol from his trainer Lutz Wanja as part of the state-prescribed doping in GDR competitive sports .
