Beginnings and first professional contract

Sternberg in the jersey of HSV (2012)

Sternberg began his career in the youth teams of Leezener SC and SV Eichede , before moving to the B-youth team (U17) of Hamburger SV for the 2007/08 season.

In the 2010/11 season, Sternberg was captain of the team in his second year in the A youth team (U19). On March 9, 2011 he celebrated his debut in the men's division over the entire season with the second team (U23) against Hannover 96 II . Over the rest of the season he developed into a regular player in Rodolfo Cardoso's team in the fourth-class Regionalliga Nord .

For the 2011/12 season Sternberg received a two-year contract until June 30, 2013 as a licensed player, which made him a member of the professional squad. At the same time, Sternberg became an integral part of the second team's squad. On September 10, 2011 Sternberg was in the squad for a Bundesliga game for the first time in the 2-0 defeat in the north derby against SV Werder Bremen . However, it was not used. Sternberg did not appear in the Bundesliga in the 2012/13 season and only collected match practice in the second team. He therefore refused an offer to extend his expiring contract. Viktor Skripnik convinced him to move to Werder Bremen instead .

Werder Bremen

For the 2013/14 season Sternberg moved to the second team (U23) from Werder Bremen . In the second team he became a fixture under coach Viktor Skripnik with 27 missions in which he also scored a goal . Sternberg was also a regular in the first half of the 2014/15 season and only missed one game.

On November 29, 2014 Sternberg celebrated his Bundesliga debut under coach Viktor Skripnik, who was promoted to head coach of the professionals , when he replaced the yellow-banned Santiago García as left-back in the 4-0 win against SC Paderborn 07 . After four more appearances - including three in the starting line-up - Sternberg received a professional contract on February 9, 2015 with a term until June 30, 2017. In the second half of the 2014/15 season, Sternberg made regular appearances in the Bundesliga, so for him - in addition to 17 appearances (three goals) in the second team, with which he was promoted to the third division - there were a total of 14 Bundesliga appearances. In the 2015/16 season he made nine Bundesliga appearances and four appearances in the second team. In the first half of the 2016/17 season , in which Skripnik was replaced by Alexander Nouri , Sternberg only made two Bundesliga appearances. At the beginning of January 2017 he was transferred to the second team.

Via Hungary to the 3rd division

In mid-January 2017, Sternberg moved to the Hungarian record champions Ferencváros Budapest . There he won the Hungarian Cup in his first six months . At Ferencváros Budapest, however, Sternberg could not prevail. After eleven appearances (one goal) in the remainder of the 2016/17 season , five appearances in the 2017/18 season .

For the 2018/19 season, Sternberg moved to the 3rd division for 1. FC Kaiserslautern . He signed a contract with the relegated second division until June 30, 2021. On his debut on matchday one against TSV 1860 Munich , Sternberg scored the 1-0 winner in the 86th minute of the game. Over the entire season, Sternberg played under Michael Frontzeck and his successor Sascha Hildmann in 33 third division games (one goal). At the beginning of the 2019/20 season , he fell out with a torn muscle fiber. After his injury, Sternberg started from the 9th to the 13th match day under the new head coach Boris Schommers . After the 14th matchday, on which he was only substituted for the first time, Sternberg was deleted from the professional squad together with Christoph Hemlein and Antonio Jonjić until further notice. Kaiserslautern was in a relegation zone at this point and had been in the lower third of the table since the 4th matchday.

At the end of January 2020, Sternberg moved within the 3rd division to Halleschen FC , with whom he signed a contract with a term until June 30, 2021.

National team

Between July and August 2009 Sternberg completed four international matches for the German U18 national team .
