JoJo (2011)

Joanna Noëlle Levesque (* 20th December 1990 in Brattleboro , Vermont ), stage name JoJo , is an American pop - and R & B - singer , songwriter and actress . She gained fame in 2004 with her debut single Leave (Get Out) , which reached number 1 on the Billboard Mainstream Top 40 and number 12 on the Billboard Hot 100 . Thus, at the age of 13, she was considered the youngest singer with a number one hit in the United States.

Life

youth

JoJo was born in Brattleboro , Vermont and grew up in a poor family of musicians in Keene , New Hampshire and Foxborough , Massachusetts . Her parents divorced when she was three years old. She lived with her mother, a musical and church singer .

Even as a toddler, JoJo imitated songs by her mother's favorite musicians such as Ella Fitzgerald , Aretha Franklin , Whitney Houston and Etta James . Her stage name is based on her nickname as a child.

From May 2005 to September 2006 JoJo was with the future soccer player Freddy Adu .

play

At the age of six, JoJo appeared in the Massachusetts theater. JoJo's first television appearance was in 1998 on Kids Say the Darndest Things on the Road in Boston with Bill Cosby . Some time later she sang for the show Destination Stardom and wowed the audience with the song Respect by Aretha Franklin. After that, JoJo was invited to the Oprah Winfrey Show .

In the film Aquamarine she cast one of the leading roles alongside Emma Roberts . She also played a lead role in the movie The Chaos Camper alongside Robin Williams . She used to appear as a guest on series such as American Dream and Bernie Mac Show . In August 2008, she took on the lead role in True Confessions of a Hollywood Starlet , starring alongside Golden Globe winner Valerie Bertinelli .

From summer 2012 she was in front of the camera for the film GBF , which premiered at the 2013 Tribeca Film Festival .

music

In her appearance at America's Most Talented Kids , she lost to Diana DeGarmo . However, their performance convinced Vincent Herbert and Barry Hankerson, who they signed for Blackground Records and Da Family Entertainment. She recorded a first live demo with producers The Underdogs and Soulshock & Karlin . On this she covered, among others, Mark Rices Mustang Sally, Etta James ' It Ain't Always What You Do (It's Who You Let See You Do It), Aretha Franklin's Chain of Fools as well as Stevie Wonders Superstition and The Temptations ' Shakey Ground.

Debut album JoJo

Before releasing her debut album, she made several appearances on the talk show On Air with Ryan Seacrest , the Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards 2004 and The Cingular Buddy Bash Tour with Zebrahead , Young Gunz and Fefe Dobson .

In June 2004, at the age of 13, she reached number one on the Billboard Top 40 mainstream charts with the piece Leave (Get Out) , making her the youngest singer to ever top the American charts. Before her, Britney Spears held this record. In Germany, the title reached number nine in the German single charts . The accompanying debut album JoJo debuted at number four on the Billboard Hot 100 .

Her second single Baby It's You feat. Bow Wow landed at number 15 in the German charts. At the MTV Video Music Awards 2004 she was nominated for best newcomer. In the same year she appeared in the opening act for Usher on his European tour. She also went with the American Olympians for the Summer Olympics on the 2004 Rock & Roll Gymnastics Championships Tour, in which Svetlana Khorkina also took part.

In August 2005, the single Not That Kinda Girl was released . The single landed at number 85 in the German charts and stayed in the top 100 for a week.

Second studio album The High Road

In 2005 JoJo recorded her second album The High Road , from which the first single Too Little, Too Late was released on November 3, 2006 . In the US, the title broke another record. He made the biggest chart jump of all time by then, with the single climbing from number 66 to number three on the Billboard Hot 100 within a week. This pushed Mariah Carey's loverboy from the top, who made it from 60th to second.

Her single How to Touch a Girl was released in November . Her third single Anything followed in May 2007 and reached number 21 on the UK charts. In 2007 she toured Europe, Mexico and America. In the same year she released the song Beautiful Girls Reply , an answer to Beautiful Girls by Sean Kingston , in which she took the girl's perspective from the original text.

First mixtape Can't Take That Away from Me

From 2007 JoJo worked on her third album called All I Want Is Everything . The singer graduated from high school in August 2009. JoJo worked on the third album with producers like Toby Gad , who wrote songs for Beyoncé and Fergie , and JR Rotem, who had produced for Britney Spears and Ashley Tisdale .

The album should first be released in late 2008, then the date was set for early 2009. In the summer of 2009, the singer finally sued her record company for the first time because it kept her waiting during a restructuring process.

In the meantime, JoJo covered the song Can't Believe It by R'n'-B singer T-Pain . The publication has been postponed several times.

The singer announced that she was working on a mixtape, which was released in 2010 entitled Can't Take That Away from Me . In August, In the Dark , their first single in four years, premiered.

Second mixtape Agápē

The long player Jumping Trains (formerly: All I Want Is Everything ) should be released in spring 2011, with The Other Chick as a pre-single for the album. After the single got little good response, The Other Chick was titled as a so-called buzz single (a promotion method to draw attention to a new music project by a singer). The first official single, Disaster, was released on August 29, 2011. The song debuted at number 87 on the Billboard Hot 100 and marks JoJo's first single on the charts in five years.

In late 2011, JoJo appeared in an advertisement for " Clearasil 's PerfectaWash," which also used new music from their planned album.

In July 2012 JoJo put her new single Demonstrate on the Internet. The reviews were positive. After the recordings for Jumping Trains were finished, the album was finally canceled. JoJo was no longer satisfied with the sound and preferred to reinvent himself. So JoJo concentrated more on contemporary R&B and took musicians like Frank Ocean and Drake as role models. From the latter she released a remix for his song Marvin's Room . A collaboration with Noah '40' Shebib began.

Another single should be available in August 2012, but the record company changed their plans and the single was never released. Months later, the singer announced that her record company Blackground Records could no longer renew the contract with Interscope Records and that a release of her upcoming album has been in the stars since 2008.

The singer released a second mixtape on December 20, 2012 (her 22nd birthday) under the name Agápē (Greek: unconditional love) for free download.

Change to Atlantic Records and third studio album Mad Love

The years of distribution difficulties of their record company Blackground Records resulted in the fact that the release of JoJo's third album was constantly postponed. In July 2013, the singer finally sued Blackground Records for breach of contract and won the lawsuit in December. That same month, she signed a new recording deal with Atlantic Records, which was announced in January 2014.

To celebrate the new chapter in her music career, JoJo decided to release three singles at the same time, all of which were released under the EP called III . To this end, JoJo invented the Portmanteau word tringle (composed of triple and single ).

On October 14, 2016, their second album Mad Love was finally released . It reached number 6 on the Billboard 200. The lead single Fuck Apologies with rapper Wiz Khalifa missed the Billboard Hot 100, however, but reached the top 40 of the US pop digital charts .

Switch to Warner and Good to Know (2020)

In August 2017, Jojo declared that he no longer belonged to Atlantic and was instead signed to Clover Music , an inprint from Interscope Records . Shortly after her 28th birthday, newly recorded versions of her first and second album with new vocal tracks appeared after her old label had removed them from all digital distribution channels.

In 2019 Interscope Records switched to Warner Records . The first release was the single Say So with PJ Morton , followed on October 10 by Joanna . On October 25, 2019, their first single for their previous album Mad Love was released . The song Sabotage is a collaboration with the rapper Chika .

Good to Know was finally released on May 1, 2020 and reached number 33 on the US charts.
