After the death of his first wife Anna Katharina, née Countess von Nassau-Wiesbaden-Idstein, and a year of mourning, Simon VII Count and Noble Herr zur Lippe (1587–1627) married Countess Maria Magdalena zu Waldeck-Wildungen (1606 -1671). Jobst Hermann was born on February 9, 1625 in Detmold Castle as the second son to Christian (1624–1634); he was followed by his sister Sophie-Elisabeth (1626–1688).

Childhood and youth

After the father's death in 1627, the mother moved with Jobst Hermann and his two siblings to Schwalenberg Castle, which was her widow's residence . In the turmoil of the Thirty Years' War the castle was repeatedly besieged, captured and looted; the family fled to Detmold in 1631 and 1634 and found shelter in the castle there.

At the age of twelve Jobst Hermann was kidnapped by the ruling Count Simon Ludwig to Detmold: Here Jobst Hermann , who had been raised in the Protestant Lutheran faith, was to be brought up in the spirit of the Protestant Reformed denomination, but his mother managed to free him through a ruse. She gave Jobst Hermann into the care of his half-sister Magdalene , abbess at Herford Abbey . He soon made his way back to Detmold: After Simon Ludwig's death, Jobst Hermann had nothing to fear from his successor, Simon Philipp , in terms of denomination.

Jobst Hermann spent his childhood and youth in Schwalenberg, Herford and at the courts of Detmold and Arolsen . After graduating from school, he traveled to Orléans in France , and later studied at the universities of Giessen and Marburg . After completing his studies, Jobst Hermann traveled with his cousin Count Johann zu Waldeck to England , France, Italy and Holland : They learned languages and folk customs.

Marriage and offspring

On October 10, 1654, Jobst Hermann married the twenty-year-old Elisabeth Juliane Countess zu Sayn, Wittgenstein and Hohnstein, Lohra and Klettenberg (* October 4, 1634 - June 23, 1689) in Wittgenstein and first moved with her to the castle in Schwalenberg .

His mother, who has owned the Biesterfeld dairy since 1630 , signed over her Biesterfeld property to Jobst Herrmann on the occasion of his wedding. This ownership certificate established the noble sideline of the house of Lippe , Lippe-Biesterfeld.

Together with his wife, Count Jobst Hermann fathered twenty children, ten girls and ten boys each, during their 24-year marriage (1654 to 1678).

death

At the end of his life, Count Jobst Hermann suffered from a mental illness with accompanying weakness. He did not recover from a fever that overcame him on July 2, 1678, and died at the age of 53 on the evening of July 6, 1678 in Biesterfeld. Jobst Hermann was buried on September 7th in the Blomberg monastery church.

heritage

In addition to the many small children, his wife was left with a high debt level of 4,049 thalers .

Library

In addition, the library of Count Jobst Hermann was of particular importance. He left a collection that was put together according to very personal considerations and preferences. It remained in Biesterfeld Castle until the death of his widow (1689) and was probably only recorded on the occasion of the division of the estate in a list dated April 11, 1690: around 280 books, including 18 folios , 68 volumes in quarto , 94 in octave and 96 books in small duodec format , various small letters, manuscripts and maps. The approximately 300 individual titles were a respectable collection for a private library for the time.
