Johnny Hallyday (2014)

Johnny Hallyday , French pronunciation: d͡zɔni aliˈdɛ (born June 15, 1943 as Jean-Philippe Smet in Paris , † December 5, 2017 in Marnes-la-Coquette ) was a French singer , songwriter and actor .

Origin and beginnings

He was born in Paris as the son of a Belgian actor, singer and dancer. His mother left him when he was eight months old; he grew up with her sister, who went on a dance tour with her daughters and the barely one year old from 1944. This aunt married the American dancer Lee Hallyday, whose name he later adopted as a stage name . In the 1960s, Hallyday became famous for rock music sung in French . He was discovered by music publisher Jacques Wolfsohn and signed by the Disques Vogue record company .

Musical career

Hallyday released his first single T'aimer follement on March 14, 1960 on Disques Vogue . Itsy bitsy, petit bikini , the French cover version of Itsy Bitsy Teenie Weenie Yellow Polka Dot Bikini , followed in the same year , and Le P'tit clown de ton coeur appeared in November 1960 . In 1961 he moved to Philips , which offered him greater financial opportunities, and remained there (through the successor company Universal ) until 2006 under contract. He then published with Warner and had more rights to his titles. From the beginning he knew how to musically transfer the North American attitude towards life into Romansh . He played the model boy on the beach on the Côte d'Azur who is looking for a girl (Je cherche une fille) as perfectly as a street boy who was able to change his macho attitude in a gentle way, and was long considered the “chameleon of the pop music business”.

Hallyday also made a few attempts to conquer the German record market (including Ja, der Elefant from 1962, My Life Only Really Begins from 1964, Let People Talk About 1966, and The Old House in New Orleans from 1967 (together with Achim Reichel and the Rattles )). His first public appearance in Germany as part of his studio session Yes, the elephant in the Hamburg music hall saw the Bild-Zeitung with a “certain lust for catastrophe” ( Der Spiegel ) : “What is in store for us?” That is only understandable, if you see Hallyday's career as a (French) political one. Already at the first concert the inventory of the performance hall broke.

Following an open air Hallyday concert on Place de la Nation in Paris, 150,000 people began rioting, destroying shops, subway stations, cars and other private property in the area, and engaging in street fights with police. This continued in the province. It was mostly fans from the working class who gathered around his concerts and expressed their dissatisfaction with their social situation.

Johnny Hallyday (2003)

In the mid-1960s, Hallyday used an argument with the French folklore singer Antoine to one of his greatest song successes: Cheveux longs et idées courtes ("Long hair and short mind"). Hallyday always only commented indirectly on general political phenomena: “I am lonely ( [Je suis seul] ) is an invitation to listen to yourself and then give expression to the feeling. Ok, that's rock! ( [that's rock'n roll!] ) “In Germany, where he had done his military service in Offenburg, Baden , he lagged behind the successes of comparable rock singers, even if he gained a certain popularity due to his scandals and catchy hits.

In his long career he completed 180 tours with 15 million viewers by 2011 and sold an estimated 85 million records by 2008. "Hallyday is out of reach in France," said Mick Jagger in view of the five sold-out concerts at the Stade de France in 1998 with a total of 450,000 tickets sold. Hallyday's biggest performance was the free concert on June 10, 2000 under the Eiffel Tower in Paris; around 600,000 spectators gathered on the Champ de Mars . A short time later this concert was also released on CD and DVD 100% Johnny Live à la Tour Eiffel . In 2014 and 2017 he performed together with two other French rock-pop legends, Eddy Mitchell and Jacques Dutronc , under the self-deprecating name Les Vieilles Canailles (The Old Villains) at the Palais Omnisports and on television; they also released an album with their greatest successes.

He also organized smaller concerts with renowned studio musicians from all over the world, such as at the Cigale in Paris in 2003. Over the decades he has repeatedly realized and produced concept albums that have received much critical acclaim, including Hamlet 1976, which dealt with the lifestyle of the aging fan base. He wrote numerous chansons and contributed to the music of many films . For the video clip of his song Casualty of Love , he hired director Bob Swaim , a César Prize winner.

other activities

As of March 2005, Hallyday published the three-monthly magazine Limited Access . With his friend, the designer Christian Audigier , he ran the very successful fashion label Smet until 2011, named after the actual family name of Johnny Hallyday. In 2011 he appeared on the theater stage for the first time and played the leading role in the French premiere of Tennessee Williams ' play Le paradis sur terre (Kingdom on Earth) .

The police estimate that up to a million people lined the path. Hallyday was buried on the Cimetière de l'église de Lorient de Saint-Barthélemy on the French Caribbean island of Saint-Barthélemy .
