Justin Marie Goudot (often short Justin Goudot ) (born April 14, 1802 in Lons-le-Saunier , † June 6, 1847 in Honda ) was a French explorer . Its botanical author abbreviation is " Goudot ".

Goudot was closely associated with the Muséum national d'histoire naturelle . Here he attended zoological lectures with Pierre André Latreille and in botany in 1822 . In May 1822, Minister Plenipotentiary of began New Granada Francisco Antonio Zea on behalf of Simon Bolivar and with the support of Alexander von Humboldt and Georges Cuvier of Europe in Paris with the idea of Art Academies of Sciences a Bogotaer Academy of Sciences building. First he recruited the Peruvian Mariano Eduardo de Rivero y Ustáriz (1798-1857), who was sent to Bogota to become head of the mining department there, with the task of founding a mining school with a mineralogical natural history cabinet and related industries. On May 28th, Jean-Baptiste Boussingault (1802-1887) was chosen to set up a chemistry department and teach chemistry at the University of Bogota . In addition, François Désiré Roulin (1796–1874) for physiology and anatomy , Jacques Bourdon (1791-ca. 1859) for entomology and Goudot for zoology for the Museo Nacional de Colombia belonging to the academy were won over. The contract with Goudot dated May 28, 1822 and was limited to 6 years in Colombia. He was hired as a zoological collector, particularly in the field of ichthyology . His salary was 800 pesos a year.

After their arrival, Boussingault, Rollin and Goudot visited the areas around Cúcuta , Pamplona , Santa Rosa , Tunja and Bogota between 1822 and 1823 . In 1823 Goudot was working in the area around Puerto Cabello in Venezuela. From there he moved on towards Santa Marta and along the Río Magdalena to Bogota. The following year he researched eastwards. Over the Cordilleras he reached the plains of the Departamento del Meta . From here he moved south and crossed the Río Ariari and the Río Guayabero and returned to Bogota. In 1825 Goudot set out north into the Muzo Valley, whose emerald mine . In 1826 he collected in the mountains in southwest Bogota near Icononzo and Pandi . His contract with the government expired in 1826, but he continued to diligently collect natural history exhibits. He crossed the valley of the Río Magdalena, where he explored the rich vegetation of the Departamento del Quindío . It was here that he discovered the sickle guuan, a species new to science.

Two years later, in 1829, he visited the Nevado del Tolima , a year later he crossed the Central Cordilleras and visited the northern part of the Cauca Valley . When he returned two years later, he took a more northerly route. In 1835 it was the area on the upper reaches of the Río Magdalena south of Honda that he toured. In the following time he was busy with other tasks and used his free time to roam the nature around him. In May 1842 he finally returned to Europe. On the way to the departure he went to Santa Marta and visited the mountains inside. When there were delays in Cartagena , he used the time to examine the flora between Cartagena and Turbaco .

Between the 1830s and 1850s, he and his brothers Jules Prosper Goudot (1803- ??) and Étienne Goudot (1801- ??) were members of the Société d'Émulation du Département du Jura . Jules Prosper also collected in Madagascar, while Étienne probably worked as a professor of chemistry and pharmacology in Bogota in 1825 and between 1834 and 1838.

The ornithological bellows he had collected were of great scientific importance and were among other things. a. described by ornithologists such as Frédéric de Lafresnaye or Jules Bourcier.

Between 1844 and 1846 he published several articles on botany and zoology in France. He was the first to report on the breeding behavior of the Andean cliff bird . In 1844 he introduced the genus of mallow family Herrania, which was new for science, for the likewise new species Herrania albiflora . Further first descriptions by Goudot are the species Elaeagia utilis belonging to the red family . and Ladenbergia muzonensis . In 1846 he introduced the new bamboo genus Aulonemia for the species Aulonemia queko .

According to Hermann Albert Schumacher , Goudot perished in misery in Honda. After his death, a woman Catherine Velossa, resident in rue de Paris, n ° 95 in Belleville, inherited his estate. Benjamin Labarbe was the notary who took care of the estate administration.

Dedication names

His importance as a natural history collector is also reflected in the large number of dedications that he received in the course of his career in animal and plant names.

Reptiles

André Marie Constant Duméril and Gabriel Bibron named the Central American blind snake Le Sténostome de Goudot (Stenostma Goudotii) in 1844, which is now known as Epictia goudotii . As early as 1837 they had described L'Anolis de Goudout (Anolis Goudottii) , now a synonym for Martinique-Anolis ( Anolis roquet ).

Birds

René Primevère Lesson dedicated the name of the sickle guan to him in 1828 , which he called Parraquas de Goudot (Ortalida Goudotii) and which is now led under Chamaepetes goudotii . Jules Bourcier honored him in 1843 in the name of the green hummingbird ( Lepidopyga goudoti ).

Mammals

1846 described Claude Gay and Paul Gervais with Odocoileus virginianus goudotii a subspecies of whitetail deer that are considered for some authors as a separate species.

In 1855 Adam White named a longhorn beetle species Acanthocinus goudotii , which is now categorized under Oreodera goudotii . In 1843 Félix Édouard Guérin-Méneville described the species Pseudodisersus goudotii (Syn: Potamophilus goudotii) belonging to the Elmidae , as well as Sandalus goudotii and in 1857 the new Bolivian stub beetle species Trochoideus goudotii . In 1867, Theodor Franz Wilhelm Kirsch named a species of long beetle Arrhenodes Goudoti (today Estenorhinus goudoti ). In 1899, Eugène Louis Bouvier named a species that Goudot had collected in Mexico in 1842 and that belongs to the Peripatidae family, Peripatus goudoti (now Oroperipatus goudoti ). Paul Gervais called 1847 a Doppelfüßerart Polydesmus goudotii . Jean Théodore Lacordaire honored him in 1845 in the name of Lema goudotii . Faustin Thibault de la Carte, Marquis de la Ferté-Sénectère, described Macrarthrius goudotii (Syn: Macratria murina ??) in 1848 .
