Karim Sebastian Elias , also known as KS Elias (born August 5, 1971 in Borken ) is a German film composer who also composes concert and stage music.

Life

Karim Sebastian Elias was born in Borken in 1971 and grew up in Esslingen . After graduating from high school in 1991, he received a 1992 scholarship from Berklee College of Music . However, he decided against studying in the USA and studied composition, piano, double bass, electric bass and music production at the Folkwang University of the Arts from 1992 to 1998 . Elias made his debut in 2001 as a film composer for a feature film with the thriller Holiday Affair and the drama Detours of the Heart . Since then, as a film composer, he has composed and produced the music for over 100 feature films, television films and documentaries, as well as for over 400 series episodes. In 2004 he was awarded the Rolf-Hans Müller Prize for Film Music by the SWR and the MFG . In the same year he composed the score for the documentary film Rhythm Is It! , which has been awarded the German Film Prize and the Bavarian Film Prize, among others . He recorded the music with the Karajan Academy of the Berlin Philharmonic . For his compositions for the films Bella Block : White Nights and Treasure Island , Elias was awarded the 2008 German TV Prize for the best music. In addition, he was awarded the prize for the best film music at the 19th Kinofest in Lünen in 2008 for his orchestral composition to Gerdas Schweigen . His music for the film Im Himmel, unter der Erde , which was awarded the Panorama Audience Award at the 61st Berlinale , received praise for the film launch in New York in the Huffington Post , The Jewish Week and the Film Journal International . The documentary Rabbi Wolff , for which Elias also composed the music, follows on from this series of projects with the director Britta Wauer . The film won the New Berlin Film Award and the Ecumenical Jury Prize and the Diversity Prize of the Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania Film Festival in 2016 at the Achtung Berlin film festival . The feature documentary Of Fathers and Sons screened at over 100 film festivals and received more than 30 awards. Among other things, it ran in 2017 in the IDFA competition in Amsterdam (IDFA Competition for Feature Length Documentary) and in 2018 in the World Cinema Documentary Competition of the Sundance Film Festival , where it was awarded the World Documentary Grand Jury Prize. In 2019 the film was nominated for both the Oscar and the Independent Spirit Award in the category of best documentary. Elias' music received a commendation in the Hollywood Reporter .

Elias composed the score for the television film The Gambler and the crime thriller Die Fahnderin with Katja Riemann , which was staged by Züli Aladağ , as well as for the film Nothing More Like Before , which won the audience award at the German Television Crime Festival 2014 and for which he won the GERMAN TELEVISION AWARD 2016 was nominated. In 2018 he composed the music for the television film "Once Son Always Son", which ARD produced for Christiane Hörbiger's 80th birthday. The film achieved the best audience rating on the broadcast slot (Friday 8:15 p.m.) on ARD 2018. For the movie Between Worlds with Ronald Zehrfeld by Feo Aladag , which was competing for the Golden Bear at the 64th Berlin International Film Festival in 2014 (Berlinale ) Elias worked as a co-composer. His soundtrack for the film Siegfried , produced by Bernd Eichinger, was pre-selected for the German Film Prize, and the essayistic film The Butterfly Hunter, for which he also composed the music, was shown at the Viennale and at the Duisburg Film Week.

In 2016 and 2017 Elias composed the music for the films Antonio, he doesn't like it! and honey, you take it! , both of which were directed by Sven Unterwaldt, as well as for the ARD two-parter Die Dasslers , which won the Bernd Burgemeister TV Prize at the Munich Film Festival in 2016 . Also for the television miniseries The puppeteers of Rainer Kaufmann , who in 2017 ran at the Munich Film Festival in competition, he composed the music. In addition, Elias regularly composes the music for television formats such as Tatort , Polizeiruf and Schimanski, e.g. B. for the 2015 broadcast Dortmund Tatort: ​​Schwerelos and the Münster Tatort: ​​One foot seldom comes from 2016 alone . Since 2016 he has also composed the music for the successful Sat.1 series Einstein . The music for the SWR series “Labaule und Erben” also comes from KS Elias. For the composition and production of the CD Hinter Gittern with songs and the film music for the series of the same name he also received a gold CD for more than 150,000 records sold.

In addition to film music, Elias also composes concert and stage music. He not only wrote the big band & orchestral score for Otto's Eleven for Otto Waalkes . but also composed and arranged two family concerts in the Berlin Philharmonic for him with orchestra and Otto as narrator. For the Nikolaisaal in Potsdam he composed a new version of the Christmas goose Auguste for orchestra and narrator.

For the recordings of his music he worked with the Berlin Philharmonic, the BSOF , Giora Feidmann and Till Brönner .

In 2006 he was on the jury for the Rolf-Hans Müller Prize for Film Music , as well as in 2013 and 2014 for the German Music Author Prize . Because of the film award for Rhythm Is It! Elias is a “born” member of the German Film Academy , for which he was selected in 2012 in the pre-selection jury for the German Film Prize . He has been a member of the board of the German Film Academy since 2017 . In spring 2013 he was appointed professor for composition and arrangement for media  in the master’s degree in film music at the Konrad Wolf University of Film and Television in Potsdam-Babelsberg. In cooperation with the German Film Academy , its knowledge portal 24 and the Babelsberg Film University , he initiated a filmed masterclass in 2017, for which he interviewed the nominees for the German Film Prize in the Best Music category and analyzed their compositions in terms of their effectiveness. In 2014 he was nominated for the German TV Prize for his music for the Zeitsprung production Nothing Like Before with Jonas Ney in the leading role. In 2015 he was nominated for the GEMA German Music Author Award in the Audiovisual Media category. Since then he has been a member of the Academy of German Music Authors .
