Karl Maximilian Adalbert Philipp Freiherr Roeder von Diersburg (born June 6, 1840 in Karlsruhe , † January 23, 1916 in Achern ) was a Prussian lieutenant general .

Life

Karl was a son of the Baden Lieutenant General Philipp Roeder von Diersburg (1801–1864) and his wife Adelheid Friederike, née Baur von Eysseneck (1806–1886). His brothers Wilhelm (1832–1909) and Ferdinand (1848–1926) advanced to become generals in the Prussian army .

Military career

Roeder visited the cadet house in Karlsruhe and then joined the field artillery regiment of the Baden army as a portepeefähnrich . He was promoted to lieutenant at the end of July 1858 and joined the fortress artillery battalion at the end of September 1860. In the autumn of 1861 Roeder was sent to Cologne to ensure the quality control of the gun material ordered at the Rheinische Hüttenwerke. After several months of assignment to the Rastatt artillery workshop , he returned to his regular regiment in early October 1863 and was promoted to lieutenant in December 1863 . On March 28, 1864, he was commanded as an orderly officer to Friedrich I of Baden and was on leave for several months after the Caucasus . Because of his language skills, Roeder had the task of bringing the Grand Duke Michael the Grand Cross of the Military Karl Friedrich Order of Merit to the Grand Duke's brother-in-law . After receptions in Tbilisi and at the Tsar's court in Saint Petersburg , he returned to Baden and was released from his command in May 1865. Under Prince Wilhelm von Baden , Roeder took part in the battles near Hundheim , Werbach and Gerchsheim during the war against Prussia .

After the peace treaty he was assigned to the mounted division of the Guard Field Artillery Regiment in mid-May 1867 and to the Great General Staff of the Prussian Army in October . With promotion to captain , Roeder was transferred to the general staff of the Baden division in March and in this position he took part in the battles near Wörth , Colmar , Dijon Nuits and Vougeot and the siege of Strasbourg in 1870/71 during the war against France . During the Battle of the Lisaine , he suffered a wound on his forehead from shrapnel . Awarded both classes of the Iron Cross and the Knight's Cross of the Military Karl Friedrich Order of Merit, Roeder joined the General Staff of the XIV Army Corps on June 3, 1871 .

In this position, with his patent as captain, he was accepted into the Association of the Prussian Army on July 15, 1871 and transferred to the General Staff at the end of November 1872. Roeder rose to major in September 1873 , was in command of the Guard Field Artillery Regiment for six months from January 1874 and was transferred to Koblenz at the end of January 1875 as a regular staff officer in the 1st Rhenish Field Artillery Regiment No. 8 . After several months in command at the artillery shooting school , he was commander of the 2nd division from March 1, 1876 to December 22, 1880, in the meantime advanced to lieutenant colonel and then received command of the 2nd Brandenburg Field Artillery Regiment No. 18 (General- Feldzeugmeister) in Frankfurt (Oder) . As a colonel , Roeder was entrusted with the command of the 4th field artillery brigade in Magdeburg on October 13, 1887 under position à la suite of the regiment, and on December 13, 1887 he was appointed commander of this large unit . After his departure, Roeder worked in 1891/94 as President of the Alsace-Lorraine State War Association and as a member of the Provincial Committee of Alsace-Lorraine . He was the landlord of Diersburg and Reichenbach, patronage of Diersburg, Oberweiler, Hofweiler and Schutterwald and owner of the Odratzheim castle estate .

In recognition of his many years of service, he was awarded the Order of the Crown, Second Class, with a star in September 1893 and the Grand Cross of the Order of the Zähringer Lion in September 1906 . On the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the Battle of Sedan , Kaiser Wilhelm II gave him the character of Lieutenant General on September 2, 1895 .

family

Roeder married Eugenie von Werder (1853–1879), daughter of the Prussian infantry general August von Werder , on October 29, 1873 in Karlsruhe . After her untimely death, he married Julie Freiin Roeder von Diersburg (1857-1893) in Karlsruhe on September 20, 1884. The six children Adelheid (* 1879), Elvire (* 1886), Philibert (1888–1915), Karl (* / † 1890), Julie (* 1893) and an unnamed daughter (* / † 1891) emerged from the marriages .
