The Kia Borrego (in North America) or Kia Mohave (in South Korea, Hangeul : 기아 모하비) is a car model of the South Korean car manufacturer Kia Motors . It was a full size luxury sport utility vehicle . The production model was first presented at the Detroit Motor Show in early January 2008 . In the manufacturer's model range, the car was located above the compact SUV Sportage and the Kia Sorento .
The vehicle, which is produced in Hwaseong ( South Korea ), Kaliningrad ( Russia ) and East Kamenogorsk ( Kazakhstan ), was designed primarily for the American market, which however did not accept it as planned. It was not offered in Europe, as the sister model Hyundai ix55 is offered here, which is, however, less suitable for off-road use.
Model history
During development, the seven-seat model was internally codenamed HM . In North America it was finally named after the Anza-Borrego Desert State Park in California. The name Mohave refers to the desert of the same name in the same state in which the manufacturer's American test site is located. The design of the Borrego was derived from the Kia KCD II Mesa study, also shown in Detroit in 2005 .
On the home market in Korea, sales began in January 2008, in the USA and on the other export markets in the middle of the same year, both as model year 2009. For exactly one year, the model was then available in the USA at base prices of US $ 26,245 to US $ 32,995 . However, after unexpectedly low sales figures, no model year 2010 was launched there. In the other markets of South Korea, some countries in South America, Eastern Europe and the Middle East, however, the vehicle is still on sale.
technology
The body of the rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive car sits on a ladder frame that is supposed to keep noise and vibrations away from the interior. In addition, the independent suspension used and the coilover kit with adaptive air suspension should ensure better driving comfort both on asphalt and off-road. The gear reduction and hill descent aid underline the terrain orientation, which, together with the third row of seats, are typical of an American "full size SUV" and which was reduced by a ladder frame and reduction in the second generation of the Sorento.
In addition to a 3.8-liter Lambda II V6 petrol engine with 203 kW (276 PS), the first 4.6-liter Tau V8 engine with 250 kW (340 PS) developed by Hyundai / Kia was also available in North America. available. The V8 was also available together with a newly developed six-speed automatic transmission. It has been given a flatter performance curve in favor of better traction capabilities. The permissible trailer load ranges from 2.3 with the V6 engine to 3.4 tons with the V8. The manufacturer gives a guarantee of 10 years or 100,000 miles driven on the drive train. With the exception of North America, the car is also powered by a 3.0-liter V6 diesel engine from the S series with 184 kW (250 hp).
The Borrego is equipped with an audio system from Infinity with a six-disc CD changer and a connection option for an external audio device. A satellite radio was also available as a Kia innovation. In addition to electrically adjustable pedals and a DVD navigation system, a parking aid with a reversing camera is optionally available.
