Preliminary round
September 18, 1969, 10:40 a.m.
The preliminary round was carried out in three runs. The first four athletes per run - highlighted in light blue - qualified for the final.
The division of the preliminary runs is hardly comprehensible. Six runners were scheduled for the first race, one of which did not start, so that in the end only one participant was eliminated. Nine athletes competed in the second run - five were eliminated. The third and final race was occupied by seven middle distance athletes - so three participants were eliminated here.
