The women's discus throw at the World Athletics Championships in 1987 was held on August 30 and 31, 1987 in the Olympic Stadium in the Italian capital, Rome .
In this competition, the female throwers from the GDR achieved a double victory. World champion was the European Championship third in 1986 Martina Hellmann , who as Martina Opitz was also world champion in 1983 . She won ahead of the reigning European champion Diana Gansky , former Diana Sachse. Bronze went to the Bulgarian European champion from 1982 Zwetanka Christowa .

World champion Martina Hellmann from the GDR improved her own world championship record twice in the final on August 31:

qualification
August 30, 1987
23 participants competed in two groups for the qualification round. The qualification distance for the direct entry into the final was 62.50 m. Seven athletes exceeded this mark (highlighted in light blue). The final field was filled with the five next-placed athletes to twelve throwers (highlighted in light green). So finally 58.88 m had to be achieved for the final.
