The shot put women at the 1987 World Championships in Athletics was on 4 and 5 September 1987 at the Olympic Stadium of the Italian capital Rome held.

With silver and bronze, the athletes from the GDR won two medals in this competition. World champion was the world record holder Natalja Lissowskaja from the Soviet Union . She won ahead of Kathrin Neimke . Bronze went to the Vice European Champion from 1986 Ines Müller , formerly Ines Reichenbach.

Twenty participants competed in two groups for the qualifying round. The qualification distance for the direct entry into the final was 19.00 m. Fourteen athletes exceeded this mark (highlighted in light blue). The final field did not have to be filled any further, the minimum number of twelve female shot putters was even exceeded, fourteen athletes contested the final on the following day.
