Chainaz-les-Frasses is a French commune in the department of Haute-Savoie in the region of Auvergne Rhône-Alpes .

geography

Chainaz-les-Frasses is located at 678  m , about 18 kilometers southwest of the city of Annecy (as the crow flies). The former farming village stretches out in the southern Albanais with a great view , on a ridge in the foothills of the Alps, between the wide valley that connects the Rumilly basin with the Lac du Bourget and the Chéran valley . The community is located within the Massif des Bauges Regional Nature Park .

The area of the 5.57 km² large municipal area covers a section of the Albanais. The main part of the area is occupied by a slope gently sloping towards the west. This slope is divided by various short valleys that drain the area to the Deisse . To the east, the community area extends to the wide, meadow-covered ridges of Héry and Chainaz. Here, at 724  m, the highest elevation of Chainaz-les-Frasses is reached.

In addition to the actual town center, Chainaz-les-Frasses also includes several hamlet settlements and farms, including:

  • Les Frasses ( 580  m ) on the western slope of the ridge of Héry
  • Chez Dupassieux ( 625  m ) on a saddle on the ridge
  • Ravière ( 555  m ) on the western slope of the Chainaz ridge

Neighboring municipalities of Chainaz-les-Frasses are Saint-Félix in the north, Héry-sur-Alby and Cusy in the east, Saint-Ours in the south and Saint-Girod in the west.

history

The place name of Chainaz is derived from the old French word chaisne (oak), while Frasses originally goes back to the Latin word fraxinus (ash). In 1860, Chainaz and Les Frasses were separated from the canton of Albens in the Savoie department and incorporated into the newly created canton of Alby-sur-Chéran in the Haute-Savoie department. The two previously independent municipalities merged in 1865 to form today's dual municipality.

With 728 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) Chainaz-les-Frasses is one of the small communities in the Haute-Savoie department. In the course of the 20th century, the number of inhabitants decreased continuously due to strong emigration (in 1901 there were still 450 inhabitants in Chainaz-les-Frasses). Since the mid-1970s, however, thanks to the beautiful residential area, there has been a marked increase in population again.

Economy and Infrastructure

Chainaz-les-Frasses was a predominantly agricultural village until well into the 20th century . In addition, there are now various local small businesses. In the meantime the village has also developed into a residential community. Many employed people are commuters who work in the larger towns in the area and in the Annecy and Chambéry area.

The village is off the main thoroughfares on a local road that leads from Albens to Cusy. There are other road links with Héry-sur-Alby and Saint-Ours. The closest connection to the A41 motorway is around 6 km away.
