Old town Lichtenfels
The ensemble comprises the city center on the southeastern edge of the Mainaue in the extent of the medieval city fortifications since the 13th and 14th centuries.
The place name is interpreted as the name of a settlement below a bare, light rock. The localization of a settlement area in the Banzgau from the 8th or early 9th century in the area northwest of the current city center on the Mühlbach is not clearly verifiable. Today's old town developed on the slope of the main valley below a castle mentioned as Litenuels in 1142 , at the location of today's box floor. In the following year the rule was divided between the Bamberg Church and the Counts of Andechs-Plassenberg. The planned construction of the street market north below the castle was forced under the influence of the Andechs-Meranians , probably in the early 13th century. After this dynasty of counts died out in 1248, the city remained in the possession of the Bamberg bishops . It received market rights in 1206 and town rights in 1231 . After 1525 the castle fell into disrepair. Rebuilt as a castle in 1555, the building was subsequently used as a box floor. The prince-bishop's rule maintained various administrative institutions in the village. The associated forest master was responsible for one of the largest forest areas of the bishop, the city functioned as a stacking and trading center. With the entire prince-bishop's rule, the place fell to the Kingdom of Bavaria in 1803 , which kept it as the official seat. From 1839 the region around the city developed into the center of basket making and basket trading in Germany. The general growth of the city, however, was primarily initiated by the connection to the railway network in 1846 and the expansion to become a national railway junction by 1885. In addition to production buildings and workshops, a large number of service apartments for railway workers and public buildings were built outside the old town.
In the development of the city fortifications , a palisade fortification from the 13th century was probably followed by expansion into a solidly fortified three-gate complex in the 14th century. The Upper Gate Tower, first mentioned in 1353, and the Bamberg Gate Tower, first mentioned in 1403 in the 14th century, as well as parts of the city wall, but only small remains of the city moat, have been preserved. Through renovation measures on the wall itself until the second half of the 18th century, the course of the ring as the boundary of the old town remained traceable. The planned urban structure is determined by the main relation of the market area, which extends from the lower, the Bamberg gate tower in the west to the upper gate tower in the east and is expanded like a square in the center. To the south of this connection, which is also part of the trade route from Bamberg to Kulmbach, the city palace forms the structural dominant, otherwise this area is almost exclusively filled with the side and rear buildings of the market square. In the square-like center of the market area, coming from the crossing of the Main in the north, Coburger Straße joins the west-east relation. The central urban situation is dominated by the town hall, which was built from 1740 to 1745 instead of a previous building. It impressively illustrates the tradition of the place as the official and administrative seat. Its baroque architectural forms also represent the influence of the prince-bishops of Schönborn in the first half of the 18th century on the cityscape. This is especially determined here in the center of Baroque and Biedermeier facade decorations. The side streets in the north-western quarter are oriented towards the market in the area of the town hall and Coburger Straße. The names indicate special classes of the population (Judengasse; with preserved synagogue) or functions (Badgasse, Farbgasse). The side streets in the northeast area follow a regular ladder structure, above which the church square with the Catholic parish church of the Assumption rises like a plateau, not far from the Upper Gate. This high location makes it possible for the church tower to clearly tower above the market development and spatially affect most areas of the city center. The baroque to Biedermeier redesign of the historical building fabric is also characteristic in the side streets. In these small artisan alleys with arable bourgeois accents, older buildings in half-timbered construction are generally hidden behind such facades. Apart from a few larger conversions and new buildings for trade, for example in Innere Bamberger Straße 7, Marktplatz 2 or Marktplatz 10, the economic development of the city in the 19th and 20th centuries had little structural impact on the inner city. In their immediate vicinity, however, extensive buildings were built for the railway companies, for the basket trade and light industry, for administration and education, a Protestant church and representative residential buildings. The railway line in the northwest, which has existed since 1846 and was expanded until the 1930s, which separates the outer part of Coburger Strasse from the old town, has a strong influence on the old town. The two city gates, the church tower, the town hall, the parish church and the box floor (the former castle) as monumental buildings determine the structure of the old town and are at the same time formative testimonies to the city's history. Bahnhofsplatz
The ensemble includes the station square with the reception building and the former civil servants' houses of the railway companies in Zweigstrasse, which are directly aligned with it, and Bahnhofstrasse as the most important connection to the old town.
The Lichtenfels station of the Bavarian King Ludwig-Süd-Nordeisenbahn was opened in 1846. In 1858 the construction of the Werra railway from Eisenach reached its southern end in Lichtenfels and in 1885 the connection to Leipzig, later part of the main line from Berlin to Munich and Italy, was completed with the crossing of the Fichtelgebirge. The importance of this junction led to extensive expansions of the railway systems until the Second World War. Until the division of Germany, the state railway companies provided around a third of all jobs in the city. The regular and almost symmetrical Bahnhofplatz with the representative sandstone reception building from the mid-19th century and the stately historicist apartment buildings from the 1880s and 1890s make clear the intention to create a new center next to the old town. The decisive factor is the architectural language developed by the gardening school and Gottfried von Neureuther for the railway art buildings, to which the more recent neo-renaissance buildings can still be related. On the south side of the square, the corner buildings at Bahnhofstrasse 5 and 14, the former basket trading house Pauson, form a counterpart to the station's facilities, even if Bahnhofstrasse itself is a very narrow and short urban area. Its southern end is determined by the Bamberger Tor, a villa (today the city museum) and commercial buildings. The southwestern front of the station square is characterized by the business and industrial buildings of the leather industry from the 1950s to 1970s, Bahnhofstrasse 7 and Conrad-Wagner-Strasse 2. The ensemble of the Lichtenfelser Bahnhofsplatz testifies not only to the importance of the city as a railway junction, but also to the important wicker and leather goods industry and as a regional trading center. Remarks
- ↑ This list may not correspond to the current status of the official list of monuments. The latter can be viewed on the Internet as a PDF using the link given under web links and is also mapped in the Bavarian Monument Atlas . Even these representations, although they are updated daily by the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation , do not always and everywhere reflect the current status. Therefore, the presence or absence of an object in this list or in the Bavarian Monument Atlas does not guarantee that it is currently a registered monument or not. The Bavarian List of Monuments is also an information directory. The property of a monument - and thus the legal protection - is defined in Art. 1 of the Bavarian Monument Protection Act (BayDSchG) and does not depend on the mapping in the Monument Atlas and the entry in the Bavarian Monument List. Objects that are not listed in the Bavarian Monument List can also be monuments if they meet the criteria according to Art. 1 BayDSchG. Early involvement of the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation according to Art. 6 BayDSchG is therefore necessary in all projects.
