List of provosts of Berlin

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The list of provosts contains the Roman Catholic and Protestant provosts of Berlin from the 13th century to the present day.

history

The first provost mentioned in Berlin was Simeon in 1244. The provosts were the highest-ranking regional clergy in the diocese of Brandenburg after the bishop . They were closely related to the Brandenburg margraves and electors and also acted as councilors and representatives for them. Since the late 15th century, the provosts of the collegiate monastery in Kölln were entrusted with the provost office for Berlin and Kölln.

Since the introduction of the Reformation in 1540, a second provost office was created in Berlin at St. Nikolai. The provosts were under the supervision of the general superintendent of the Mark Brandenburg and exercised the supervisory office of the municipal church and school system in addition to their pastoral office, so they had the function that was performed by superintendents in the country . Shortly after taking office, they were almost always appointed as councilors in the Kurmärkische Konsistorium . With the introduction of church districts in Berlin, headed by superintendents, the powers of the provosts were restricted. After the dissolution of the collegiate foundation in Kölln in 1608, the provost there resided at St. Petri.

Since 1814, Catholic provosts were again appointed to St. Hedwig's Church.

In the 20th century, the tasks of the Protestant provosts were changed, who were now active in the consistory of the regional church and no longer responsible for Berlin.
