The Makuhari Messe ( Japanese 幕 張 メ ッ セ ) is one of the most famous convention centers in Japan . The convention center is located in Nakase, Mihama-ku in the city of Chiba , in the west of the Chiba prefecture , near Tokyo .

Building complex

The complex consists of the International Exhibition Hall 1-11 ( 国際展示場 , Kokusai Tenjijo ), the International Convention Center ( 国際会議場 , Kokusai kaigijō ) and the Makuhari Event Hall ( 幕張イベントホール, Makuhari ibento Horu ) on a total area of around 210,000 m². There are parking spaces for 6,000 vehicles on the site.

history

The convention center was completed and opened in the late 1980s. The building was designed by the respected and award-winning Japanese architect Fumihiko Maki .

The building was initially called the Nippon Convention Center ( 日本 コ ン ベ ン シ ョ ン セ ン タ ー , Nippon konbenshon sentā ). On July 1, 2005, the name was changed to Makuhari Messe by the operating company . The name of the building was borrowed from Makuhari , the name of the business district, and the German word Messe .

Transport links

Makuhari Messe is located between downtown Tokyo and Narita International Airport, and relatively close to Tokyo Disney Resort in Urayasu and the black sand beaches in Pacific Chiba Prefecture. It has good transport links and is the Keiyō Line of JR East to reach from the JR Kaihin-Makuhari.

Events

Exhibitions

The exhibition center offers suitable conditions for high-tech events. It is a traditional venue for the Tokyo Auto Salon (annual auto show in January), Tokyo Game Show (annual video game and hardware exhibition in September), and Jump Festa (annual manga , anime and video game exhibition in December). From 1989 to 2009, the Tokyo Motor Show was held here every one to two years in October.

Concerts

In addition to the exhibitions, the Makuhari Messe has also made an internationally recognized name for itself as a venue for large concerts:

On July 2, 2005, the Japanese Live 8 concert with McFly , Good Charlotte and Björk took place here, which was also the first Live 8 concert.

Another big concert was the Summer Sonic Festival on August 12, 2006, at which Daniel Powter , Muse and Daft Punk played among others .

Other concert appearances in Chiba were those of Kraftwerk and Jack Johnson .

One of the two Japanese Live Earth concerts was held here on July 7, 2007, with Xzibit , Rihanna , Koda Kumi and Linkin Park on stage .
