German and Polish Mariampol ) is a Lithuanian industrial and district capital . It is also the seat of the municipality of the same name and forms in this three urban administrative districts.
Marijampolė (1955–1989 Kapsukas ,geography
Marijampolė is located in the south of Lithuania on both sides of the Scheschuppe ( lit.Sešupė ) - around 50 km southwest of Kaunas and around 125 km west of the state capital Vilnius near the borders with Poland and the Kaliningrad Oblast (Koenigsberg) in the historical region of Sudauen ( Suvalkija ).
Buildings
Basilica of the Archangel St. Michael
The Roman Catholic Church of Archangel Michael, built in 1824 in the classical style, was elevated to the rank of a minor basilica by Pope John Paul II in 1992 . It is subordinate to the diocese of Vilkaviškis . Archbishop Jurgis Matulaitis , who was declared blessed by the Pope in 1987, is buried in the church. Since he is the only Blessed Lithuanian so far in modern times, the church is an important pilgrimage church for both Lithuanians and foreigners.
St. Vincent and Paul Church
The church was built in 1888 as an orthodox church in neo-Byzantine style for the Russian army and Tsar Alexander III. dedicated. After the First World War it was given to the Marians . Used as a warehouse after the Second World War, the building has been used as a church again since 1990.
Evangelical Lutheran Church
The Evangelical Lutheran Church of Marijampolė was built in 1841 in the classical style, and the tower was added in 1850. After Lithuania was incorporated into the USSR in 1940, the church was used for non-religious purposes. Restored in the 1990s, it is now used again as a place of worship by the Evangelical Lutheran congregation.
Marijampolė synagogue
The Marijampolė synagogue, built in 1870 and secluded, is used as a house for further training for teachers.
Station building
Marijampolė Station, on the Kaunas-Šeštokai-Alytus railway line, was built between 1923 and 1925.
economy
As the center of an agriculturally profitable region, the city is home to production facilities for the food and mechanical engineering industries (especially for agricultural use). One of the largest used car markets in Europe is also located here .
Companies
There are a number of companies in the city, including Marijampolės pieno konservai , a dairy processing company, and UAB Arvi ir Ko , a Lithuanian agricultural group that built the ARVI Arena . AB Fasa (formerly with 2,100 employees) is a packaging technology company , Mantinga is a leading Baltic manufacturer of frozen baked goods and cold snacks. The German paint manufacturer Meffert Farbwerke operates a factory for environmentally friendly paints and plasters, the Lithuanian company UAB Meffert Baltica with 20 employees (as of 2015). The hospital Marijampolė employs over 700 people.

There is a special economic zone, the Marijampolė Free Economic Zone, to provide legal and administrative relief for investors .

The city has a university, the College Marijampolė . Until he moved to Kaunas in 2005, the Vilkaviškis seminary also existed here . The Marijampolė Vocational Training Center and the Rygiškių Jonas High School Marijampolė are also available at educational institutions .
