Together with Dave Scott (won Hawaii six times: 1980, 1982, 1983, 1984, 1986, 1987), Scott Molina and Scott Tinley , Mark Allen was one of the "Big Four", which at that time made up almost every triathlon among themselves. Over the course of his racing career, which officially ended in 1996, he managed to maintain an average of 90% top three finishes. He started and won ten times the triathlon Longue Distance de Nice , which was the triathlon with the greatest media attention in the 1980s and 1990s, alongside the Ironman Hawaii. His nickname is "The Grip".

In 1996 he ended his active professional career. Allen appeared in the following years as the organizer of some triathlon races (including Ironman Austria ) and gave training seminars. Up until 2002, Mark Allen was married to triathlete Julie Moss (* 1958) for twelve years , whose famous finish on all fours at the 1982 Ironman inspired him to take part in the triathlon.
