Markus Gertken (* 1966 in Cloppenburg ) is a German actor .

Life

Training and career start

Markus Gertken comes from an artistically affine family. His father Heinrich Gertken, head of the office of the Cloppenburg Chamber of Agriculture, was one of the founding members and actors on the Waldbühne Ahmsen in 1949 . Markus Gertken grew up in his hometown, where he graduated from the Clemens-August-Gymnasium in 1985. He received his acting training from 1988 to 1991/1992 at the Otto Falckenberg School in Munich , where Kurt Huebner and Dieter Dorn were among his teachers. He had his first theater engagement at the Deutsches Theater Berlin ; this was followed by a number of years as a permanent member of the ensemble at Theater Basel. In 1996 Gertken moved to the Schauspielhaus Cologne . There was the beginning of his regular collaboration with the director Torsten Fischer . Until 2005 he appeared in numerous productions at the Cologne Theater. He played under Fischer's direction a. a. the title role in Liliom (1996), Alfons Klostermeyer in Faith, Love and Hope (2002), Alwa Schön in Lulu (2003) and Andri in Max Frisch's Andorra (2005). In the 2003/04 season he took over the secretary Wurm Schiller's tragedy Kabale und Liebe at the Schauspielhaus Cologne (director: Michael Talke ).

In 2001 he took over the speaking role of Bassa Selim in Torsten Fischer's controversial production of Mozart's Singspiel Die Entführung aus dem Serail at the Cologne Opera . The production, in which Gertken as Bassa Selim also spoke almost all the dialogues of the other people, was met with violent expressions of disapproval. In 2002 he made his first guest appearance at the Theater in der Josefstadt in Vienna ; he played Sloane in Joe Orton's play Be nice to Mr. Sloane (director: Günter Krämer ).

Change to Berlin

In 2003 Gertken went to Berlin for work . From 2003 he was a permanent member of the ensemble at the Berlin Schaubühne . He played there u. a. Vincent in Der Würgeengel by Karst Woudstra (director: Thomas Ostermeier , 2003), Diomedes in Troilus and Cressida (director: James Macdonald , 2005) and as Oberon in A Midsummer Night's Dream , based on motifs by William Shakespeare (director / choreography: Thomas Ostermeier, Constanza Macras , 2006), whom he portrayed as a "lustful lover in minislip and cowboy butt".

From 2005 he played regularly at the Renaissance Theater in Berlin. In 2006, he played the role of Kenneth Snell in the German-language premiere of the comedy Damned Long ago by Michael Frayn ; Directed by Torsten Fischer. In 2008 he appeared there with Nicole Heesters in the play Mutters Courage by George Tabori ; Directed by Torsten Fischer. Heesters / Gertken had already successfully presented this production at the Hamburger Kammerspiele . In 2010 he played there in the comedy Schöne Bescherungen by Alan Ayckbourn on the side of David Bennent , Anna Böttcher and Julia Stemberger ; Directed by Tina Engel .

Guest performances

In the 2005/06 season he made guest appearances at the Vienna Akademietheater . There he played the role of Ragnar Brovik in Henrik Ibsen's play Baumeister Solness under the direction of Thomas Ostermeier . The production was also recorded for television by ORF . In 2008 he played at the Volkstheater Wien under the direction of Antoine Uitdehaag in the Austrian premiere of A Spanish Play by Yasmina Reza . In 2010 he appeared at the State Opera Unter den Linden in Torsten Fischer's production of the Musikheater Hölderlin - an expedition by Peter Ruzicka . In 2011 he took on the title role in Kleist's comedy Amphitryon at the Ernst Deutsch Theater in Hamburg . In the 2016/17 season he appeared at the Staatstheater am Gärtnerplatz in Munich as Oswald in the opera King Arthur . In 2018 he appeared at the Schaubühne Berlin and again at the Renaissance Theater in Berlin.

Performances in Bad Hersfeld

Since 2008 Gertken has made several guest appearances at the Bad Hersfeld Festival on the stage of the Bad Hersfeld monastery ruins. In 2008 he played the military leader Lionel in The Maiden of Orleans , then in 2009 the ancient hero Odysseus in the stage version of Homer's Odyssey , once again directed by Torsten Fischer. In 2010 Gertken performed for the third season in a row at the Bad Hersfeld Festival. Under the direction of Holk Freytag he played the title role in Schiller's play Wilhelm Tell . For his portrayal of Wilhelm Tell as a “nature and freedom-loving individualist who involuntarily gets caught in the mills of power”, he received the audience award for “Best Actor” at the Bad Hersfeld Festival in 2010.

In the summer of 2011 he played the monkey king “Louis” in Bad Hersfeld in a stage version of the jungle book . In 2013 and 2014 he was the inquisitor and witch hunter Bernard Gui in Bad Hersfeld in a stage version of The Name of the Rose . In 2014 he also played the role of Wilhelm Cecil, Baron von Burleigh, the grand treasurer and advisor to Elizabeth I in Maria Stuart .

Movie and TV

Gertken also took on a few film and television roles. However, the focus of his artistic activity is clearly the theater. In 2001 he worked in the short film The Demons , a graduation film from the Ludwigsburg Film Academy . In 2002 he received a nomination for the " First Steps Award " as a member of the ensemble of The Demons . In 2005 Gertken was directed by Danielle Proskar in a leading role as husband and father in the movie Karo und der liebe Gott ; his partner was Petra Morzé .

Gertken also had numerous episode roles in TV series, first in Kommissar Rex (2002), Wilde Engel (2003), SOKO Wismar (2010), Notruf Hafenkante (2013; as a suspected rocker gang boss and pimp), Alles Klara (2014; as "Wikinger" Horst Wagenknecht) and A Fall of Love (2014; as an investment advisor and father of the "kidnapped" children). In April 2015 he was seen again in the ZDF crime series SOKO Wismar . In the episode Glück und Glas he played the psychiatrist and psychotherapist Dr. Oliver Marx. In October 2015, he was also seen in a leading role in the ZDF crime series SOKO Leipzig , as the stepfather of two murdered young girls from the cosplay scene.

In March 2016 Gertken was seen in the television film No marriage without a break on Das Erste as the fishmonger Jörn Schröder; he played the ex-lover of the main female character Susanne ( Inka Friedrich ). In March 2016, Gertken was also seen in the ZDF series last trace Berlin in a leading role in the episode as chief detective and hobby boxer Andreas Wiegand. In April 2018 Gertken was seen in an episode role in the Austrian crime series SOKO Kitzbühel , as the suspected husband of a murdered, successful gas station owner. In the 16th season of the ZDF series SOKO Wismar (2019), Gertken again took on an episode role as a neurosurgeon and husband of a murdered nurse.

Markus Gertken was married to the American soprano Mary Mills , with whom he has two children. He has lived in Berlin since 2004.
