Michael Richard "Mike" Sexton (born September 22, 1947 in Shelby , Indiana ) is a professional American poker player , commentator and official. He won a bracelet of the World Series of Poker and a title at the World Poker Tour .

Training and beginnings

Sexton attended the Ohio State University , where he worked in Public Recreation (too German about public recreation graduated) after of Business (the American equivalent of the Business Administration was changed) as a main subject there. He often jokes that the only reason he's so good at poker is because he played a lot in college. He also played a lot of contract bridge and taught it to school classes in North Carolina .

Sexton joined the US Army in 1970 as a parachutist in the 82nd Airborne Division . The division had just returned from Vietnam so he did not see any military action. In the army he taught some people to dance and one of his students persuaded him to try to work as a merchant. He did so after two years, when his draft period was over. After some time, Sexton noticed that he could earn more money with poker than as a businessman, so from 1977 he devoted himself entirely to poker.

Poker career

Sexton at the 2006 WSOP

Although Sexton attended many tournaments, he did not initially make it to the World Series of Poker (WSOP) in Las Vegas because he coached small league baseball teams and the appointments overlapped. In 1985 he moved to Nevada to become a full-time poker player. In 1989 Sexton won a WSOP tournament in the Seven Card Stud Split variant and thus over 100,000 US dollars in prize money and a bracelet .

Still, Sexton is far better known for promoting various poker events and poker services. He is the main organizer of the World Poker Tour (WPT) and spokesman for partypoker , one of the largest online poker sites where he plays himself under the nickname Mike-Sexton . He wrote for Card Player Magazine and the Gambling Times . He also founded the now closed WSOP Tournament of Champions , in which only the tournament winners of last year were allowed to participate. He is also known as the “Ambassador of Poker” for his work to bring poker to the public. Due to his relationships, he is no longer allowed to play in some poker tournaments. Although the number of games he plays has decreased, he says he doesn't mind that much because he's been playing it for so many years. On February 15, 2006, Sexton was named Poker's Top Ambassador at the Card Player Magazine Player of the Year Awards Gala . In 2009 he was inducted into the Poker Hall of Fame .

In late June 2006, Sexton won the WSOP Tournament of Champions for $ 1 million in prize money. He won the last hand with A A against Daniel Negreanus J Q on a board of 10 8 4 A 8 . Sexton donated half of his profits after tax to five charities. At the 2008 WSOP , Sexton finished fourth in the Pot Limit Hold'em World Championship for around $ 250,000. In early July 2012, Sexton played the million dollar Big One for One Drop at the 2012 WSOP and secured his highest cash prize of more than $ 1.1 million for ninth place. In the following year, he again made the money at the most expensive event on the WSOP tournament schedule and finished 16th in the High Roller for One Drop at the 2013 WSOP for almost $ 210,000. In mid-November 2016, Sexton won the WPT Main Event in Kahnawake with a prize of around 425,000 Canadian dollars . In February 2017, he reached the final table of the WPT Main Event again and finished fourth at the LA Poker Classic in Los Angeles for around $ 300,000.

Overall, Sexton has earned over $ 6.5 million in poker in live tournaments.
