Over 160 connections with over 20,000 members belong to the MKV and thus form the largest student and graduate association in Austria. The MKV is a founding member of the Austrian Student Union , an Austria-wide representation of students.

The MKV is committed to Christian social teaching , a democratic Austria and a united Europe . The MKV is non-party ; a conservative orientation of its members can be seen.

The MKV also works closely with the associations of the Association of Colored Girls and the Association of Christian Student Associations in Austria .

history

1933 to 1938

The MKV was founded on September 9, 1933 on the occasion of the Catholic Day in Vienna , but its roots go back to the 19th century (predecessor associations: “Mittelschüler-Cartell-Verband” (MCV) in 1900, “Association of Catholic-German Pennal Associations Austria”) "(VPV) in 1919," Christian-German Student Union "(CDSB), also 1919). The oldest member association of the MKV is Teutonia Innsbruck , founded in 1876.

On October 18, 1933, just a few weeks after its founding, the MKV decided to ban members of the NSDAP . After initially welcoming authoritarian Austrian politics during the regime of Engelbert Dollfuss and Kurt Schuschnigg (1934–1938), the MKV distanced itself from it when the introduction of a comprehensive state youth - into which the MKV was to be incorporated - was planned. The association joined the “Reichsarbeitsgemeinschaftischer Catholic Jugendverbände Österreichs” (Reich Working Group of Catholic Youth Associations in Austria), whose relative independence was given until 1937 under church supervision by the Concordat . Nevertheless, well-known representatives of the regime such as Federal Chancellor (1930/31) Otto Ender - he drafted the constitution of the so-called corporate state announced on April 24, 1934 - or the Vice Chancellor and later Mayor of Vienna Richard Schmitz , members of MKV connections. But Engelbert Dollfuss's posthumous admission as an honorary member of the MKV association Amelungia Innsbruck after his murder by National Socialist supporters in the July coup shows his closeness to the ruling regime.

1938 to 1945

With the "Anschluss" of Austria in 1938, the connections were banned. On the day the German troops marched in, club premises of the MKV connections were devastated by members of the NSDAP and inventory was confiscated. Some members of Catholic connections had given their proximity to the Austro-fascist corporate state in concentration camps (z. B. the later Federal Chancellor Leopold Figl ). Many members were actively involved in resistance movements, some paid with their lives.

A manifestation against the Nazi regime was a religious festival, the " Rosary Festival " in St. Stephen's Cathedral in Vienna on October 7, 1938: 7,000-10,000 young people, including many MKV members, took part in the mass led by Cardinal Innitzer . The famous words of Innitzer: “Now [we have to] confess our faith all the more steadfastly, to Christ - our leader!” And the rally following the mass, at which the young people chanted “ We want to see our bishop ”, were included punished for storming the archbishop's palace by the Hitler Youth , during which a member of the MKV was thrown from the first floor into the courtyard of the Kurhaus.

Since 1945

Since the occupying powers recognized the MKV as an association against National Socialism, it was reactivated in 1945. Almost all connections of the MKV resumed their operations in the following years. Most connections excluded all members who had collaborated with the Nazi regime. Among the important politicians of this time were the Catholic couleur students Julius Raab and Leopold Figl.

The post-war years brought a great increase in membership numbers. After 1967 a consolidation was noticeable. In the last few years, increasing numbers of members have been recorded in the MKV associations.

aims

  • The MKV wants to stimulate pupils at secondary schools to “critically examine the world and society on the basis of a Christian worldview determined by the dynamic principles of religio, patria, scientia and amicitia” .
  • The members of the association are to be “enabled to work in public life and in society and to realize the values of Catholic students in families, work and society” .
  • As an independent Catholic lay organization, the MKV wants to "make its contribution to building a humane society and a world that follows the divine order of creation" .

The MKV takes great care not to be confused with striking connections. On his homepage, he states: “In principle, the MKV stipulated in a resolution of the cartel meeting that actions that serve fraternization are to be rejected. Even if there are external similarities in customs, the MKV as a Catholic association represents a different tradition and a different worldview. In addition, contact with striking connections harms the public image of the MKV, which is repeatedly confronted with prejudices in this regard. Attending fraternity events in Couleur is also to be rejected. "

Principles and motto

The four principles of the MKV are “patria”, “religio”, “scientia” and “amicitia”.

  • Religio : The promotion of being a Catholic, the promotion of tolerance among the Christian denominations and the active shaping of one's own life based on the Catholic faith in responsibility before God, people and creation.
  • Patria : The love of the fatherland. According to the MKV website: To be Austrian is an honor and an obligation at the same time. Every democratic state lives through the responsibility of every citizen for the state. Active participation at all levels of the community is a civic duty. The roots in history and the democratic development of Austria are an essential basis for the further development of this community in a united Europe.
  • Scientia : The education of its members is an important task for the MKV. Therefore, the completion of a higher school with Matura is a prerequisite for a member to remain in an association of the MKV. The MKV itself offers further training opportunities for its members with the cartel management school and various regional association training courses.
  • Amicitia : As a defining element of the association, personal friendship across all generations is a matter of course as a principle of life that goes beyond studying. Dealing with one another is shaped by responsibility for this lifelong spiritual and material obligation.

criticism

It is criticized that the Mittelschüler-Kartell-Verband is an organization consisting exclusively of male associations. Connections that decided a few years ago to take on women left the middle school cartel association. In the meantime friendship agreements have been concluded between the MKV and these connections, as well as with the women's corporation associations VfM and VCS .

Another point of criticism is the position of the association on the question of abortion . For example, in a broadcast of the association entitled “Declaration of the MKV against radicalism” , the right to abortion is placed on the same level as xenophobia . "Liberalization of abortion" and "exclusion of our foreign fellow citizens" prepare the ground for those "who are willing to use physical violence to abolish democracy" , it says there.

In the opinion of critics, the memory of Federal Chancellor Engelbert Dollfuss , who was murdered by the National Socialists in 1934, is still honored today in the MKV .
