Monroe County is a county in the US state of Alabama . The county seat is in Monroeville . The county is part of the dry counties , which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.

The county is located in southwest Alabama, about 50 km to the south from Florida's northern border, about 80 km to the west from Mississippi , and has an area of ​​2,679 square kilometers, of which 22 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Wilcox County , Butler County , Conecuh County , Escambia County , Baldwin County, and Clarke County .

history

Monroe County was formed on June 29, 1815 by Governor David Holmes (politician) of the Mississippi Territory. The first district capital was'Fort Clairborne. In 1832 it became Monroeville. The county was named after the fifth President of the United States, James Monroe . Monroe served as an officer in the American Revolutionary War and was a delegate to the Continental Congress as well as a senator and governor of Virginia. After serving as Secretary of War and Secretary of State in Madison's cabinet , he was eventually succeeded in office.

Five structures and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) as of April 5, 2020, including the Old Monroe County Courthouse , the Monroeville Downtown Historic District, and the New Hope Baptist Church .

According to the 2000 census , Monroe County had a population of 24,324. Of these, 241 people lived in collective accommodation, the other residents lived in 9,383 households and 6,774 families. The population density was 9 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 57.75 percent white, 40.07 percent African American, 0.97 percent Native American, 0.29 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.13 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.79 percent were descended from two or more races. The average household size was 2.57 and the average family size was 3.09 people.

28.3 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 8.6 percent between 18 and 24, 26.8 percent between 25 and 44, 22.5 percent between 45 and 64 and 13.8 percent were 65 years or older. The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females there were 90.8 males and for females aged 18 and over there were 86.4 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $ 29,093 , and the median income for a family is $ 34,569. Males had a median income of $ 31,096 versus $ 18,767 for females. The per capita income was $ 14,862. 18.2 percent of families and 21.3 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
