NGC 2721 is a barred spiral galaxy with a high rate of star formation of the Hubble type SBbc in the constellation Water Serpent south of the ecliptic . It is an estimated 158 million light years from the Milky Way .
The object was discovered on February 1, 1786 by the astronomer William Herschel with a 48 cm telescope.
