Numan Kurtulmuş at a Has Party congress

Numan Kurtulmuş (* 1959 in Ordu ) is a Turkish politician and supporter of the Millî Görüş movement. In 2010 he separated from the Islamist Happiness Party (SP) and was a co-founder of the People's Voice Party (HAS). Until July 2018 he was Minister for Culture and Tourism of the ruling AKP party .

Life

Numan Kurtulmuş was born in 1959 on the Black Sea coast in Ordu . According to his own account, at the age of ten he was an admirer of the Islamist politician Necmettin Erbakan . After graduating from an İmam Hatip School in Istanbul , he studied at the Faculty of Economics at Istanbul University (graduated in 1982)

From 1988 to 1989 he was in the USA at the " Temple University School of Business & Management" and from 1990 to 1993 at the " Cornell University New York State School of Industrial & Labor Relations". In 1994 he became a lecturer at Istanbul University. In 1996 he published a book entitled "Sanayi Ötesi Dönüşüm" . In 2004 he became a professor at the private Istanbul University of Commerce ( İstanbul Ticaret Üniversitesi ) founded in 2001 .

His wife Sevgi Kurtulmuş also studied at the Cornell University New York State School of Industrial & Labor Relations and taught in Istanbul. In 1998, Dean Kemal Alemdaroğlu dismissed her for wearing a headscarf following warnings. Her appeal against the dismissal was rejected by the European Court of Human Rights . She is a founding member of the AKDER ( Ayrimciliga Karsi Kadin Haklari Dernegi , Association for Women's Rights Against Discrimination), which is particularly committed to lifting the headscarf ban and is at the forefront of the work for the goals of the Millî Görüş movement.

Political life

Numan Kurtulmuş joined the Virtue Party (FP) in 1998 and was the chairman of the party for Istanbul. After the FP was banned, he joined the Saadet Partisi, where he was chairman of the party for Istanbul and at the same time deputy chairman for the party. He was considered a leading functionary of the younger generation and as "Crown Prince Erbakans".

Kurtulmuş identifies modern Western values as the main source of today's problems. He considers the Imam Hatip Schools to be "the most important social project in the history of the Turkish Republic" and works with the Association of Imam Hatip Schools Graduates Önder.

At the party congress on October 26, 2008, Kurtulmuş was elected as the new chairman with 924 of 946 votes to succeed Recai Kutan . To mobilize supporters, Kurtulmuş relies on protests and demonstrations, for example against the Danish caricatures of Muhammad , against the American "massacre in Fallujah " and against the " genocide " in Gaza.

In the local elections on March 29, 2009 , the Saadet Partisi won 5.2 percent of the votes nationwide, so the SP has improved its result compared to the 2004 local elections. According to election analysts, there has been a sizeable proportion of voters who have migrated from the AKP to the SP. This was mainly attributed to the comparatively “more modern” image of the new party leader.

At a party conference in July 2010, Kurtulmuş was re-elected party chairman. However, there was a conflict with Erbakan, as Kurtulmuş did not put family members and friends of Erbakan on his electoral list for the party executive. 1250 delegates were present at the party congress. It was only after the third electoral term that Kurtulmuş could be re-elected party chairman with 310 votes. Most of the delegates abstained and refused to support Kurtulmuş. The party-internal dispute escalated in August with physical confrontations at an Iftar festival held by Kurtulmuş and a court case that the SP ordered new elections. On October 1, 2010, Kurtulmuş officially announced that he would resign as chairman of the Saadet Partisi and at the same time as a member.

On November 1st, 2010 he founded his party Halkın Sesi Partisi (Party of the Voice of the People). A merger between HAS and AKP became apparent in mid-September. At the extraordinary party congress on September 19, 2012, the HAS approved the plan. Kurtulmuş was later elected to the party executive committee as an expert on economic affairs at the AKP party convention in October 2012.

In Davutoğlu's cabinets ( I , II , III ) he was one of the deputies of the Prime Minister . Before he took up his post as Minister of Culture and Tourism in the Yıldırım Cabinet , he was also Deputy Prime Minister.
