Oakland is a town in Kennebec County in the state of Maine in the United States . In 2010 there were 6,240 inhabitants in 2,543 households in an area of 72.96 km².

Geographical location
Oakland is north of Kennebec County and borders Somerset County . It is bordered by East Pond in the northwest and Ellis Pond in the southwest . and to the north of Annabessacook Lake and Wilson Pond . The Messalonskee Lake divides the territory of the Town and it drains into the Kennebec River . The surface is rather flat, the highest point is the 214 m high Howland Hill .

history
The area of the later town of Oakland, initially known by the Indian name Taconnet , was settled by settlers of British descent in the second half. Most of them came from Massachusetts and New Hampshire. The Kennebec Purchase also belonged to the Plymouth Claims area.
Oakland originally formed a town together with Waterville and the part that is now Winslow. This was divided in 1872 into Winslow, east of the Kennebec River, and Waterville, west of the Kennebec River. The western part of the part was organized independently as Town West Waterville in 1873 . West Waterville was renamed Oakland in 1883.

The Interstate 95 passes through the northeast corner of the area of the Town. To the west runs Maine State Route 137 , north to south on the eastern shore of Lake Messalonskee the Maine State Route 23 and on the western shore of Lake Messalonskee the Maine State Route 11 .

There are no medical facilities or hospitals in Oakland. The closest are in Waterville.
The Oakland Public Library was built between 1913 and 1915. It was donated by the Andrew Carnegie Foundation and the property was donated by Alice Benjamin.
