history

The area of ​​the later town of Oakland, initially known by the Indian name Taconnet , was settled by settlers of British descent in the second half. Most of them came from Massachusetts and New Hampshire. The Kennebec Purchase also belonged to the Plymouth Claims area.

Oakland originally formed a town together with Waterville and the part that is now Winslow. This was divided in 1872 into Winslow, east of the Kennebec River, and Waterville, west of the Kennebec River. The western part of the part was organized independently as Town West Waterville in 1873 . West Waterville was renamed Oakland in 1883.
