final
Date: September 4, 1972, 4 p.m.
Jörg Drehmel, European champion from 1971 , and the Olympic champion from 1968 , Viktor Sanejew, were favorites, especially since the Cuban world record holder Pedro Pérez failed in the qualification. The silver medalist from Mexico City , the Brazilian Nelson Prudêncio, was back at the start and, unlike Pérez, reached the final.
In the final, the medal award was decided after the first two rounds. Sanejew was in the lead with 17.35 m supported by the wind, while Drehel was second with 17.02 m. Prudêncio was third with 16.87 m. Drehel came within four centimeters of Saneyev in the fifth run, but could not improve in the last attempt. Prudêncio succeeded in doing this with a width of 17.05 m, but this did not change the placements on the medal ranks. The Romanian Carol Corbu, third in the 1971 European Championship, finished fourth with 16.85 m. The third-best distance of the two jumpers in question had to be used to determine fifth and sixth place. Both the American John Craft and Mansour Dia from Senegal had the best distance 16.83 m. Both had the second best width of 16.77 m. In the third-best width, Craft was 16.75 m ahead of Dia with 16.15 m.
Jörg Drehmel won the first German medal in the triple jump .
