Terry Kubicka first performed a backflip during a competition. He stood this somersault with both legs, unlike other figure skating jumps. In the same year, the International Ice Skating Union changed its rules and banned somersaults in figure skating.
John Curry offered an outstanding freestyle. Great Cranston was too weak in duty . Jan Hoffmann made mistakes. There were no runners from West Germany or Switzerland . Roland Koppelent from Austria had to withdraw.

Dorothy Hamill is the last Olympic champion who did not show a triple jump in the freestyle. World champion Dianne de Leeuw and Christine Errath made mistakes, especially in the planned triple jumps. Isabel de Navarre won the duty. According to the report of the Arbeiter-Zeitung on February 15, Hamill had been programmed for the Olympic victory with the best possible management, offered a lackluster freestyle that lacked the great line and charisma. The 14-year-old Kristofics-Binder had behaved well. The bright spots of the evening were 15-year-old Pötzsch and 13-year-old Jelena Wodoresowa.
Dagmar Lurz (FRG) was tenth and Marion Weber (GDR) eleventh. Claudia Kristofics-Binder (AUT) came in 16th and Danielle Rieder (SUI) had to withdraw.

Irina Rodnina and Alexander Saizew won as expected, Romy Kermer and Rolf Oesterreich, however, were strong competitors for the Olympic victory. Manuela Groß and Uwe Kagelmann surprisingly won their second Olympic bronze medal because Irina Vorobjewa and Alexander Vlasow made an unusually large number of mistakes.
Ursula Nemec and Michael Nemec (AUT) took tenth place out of 14 participating couples.
Ice dance
Date: February 9th
Lyudmilla Pachomowa and Alexander Gorshkov won unchallenged. There were neither German nor Swiss couples at the start.
