After the Tree Hill High School basketball team's victory celebration got out of hand following their recent win, most of the team's players were suspended. Coach Whitey Durham then offers Lucas Scott, half-brother of the team's star - Nathan Scott - a place on the team. Dan Scott, father of Lucas and Nathan, is not enthusiastic about it, fearing Luke might steal the limelight from Nathan. He doesn't recognize Luke, whose mother, Karen Roe, was pregnant in high school, as his son and doesn't want anything to do with him. Nathan, who also doesn't want to have anything to do with Luke, suggests that they play basketball against each other to decide whether he can join the team or not. Since Luke wins this game by a narrow margin, he is now part of the Ravens - the Tree Hill high school basketball team.

This increases his popularity at school many times over, which is why Brooke Davis, Peyton's best friend, noticed him. Nathan now finally has reason to feel threatened by Lucas and incites the team to harass him heavily. Meanwhile, Peyton finds out that Luke, without her knowledge, turned in her drawings to Thud Magazine, the local magazine she originally intended to send them to. The publisher offers to let her draw a comic strip for the magazine. Nathan is having problems at school, so he asks Luke's best friend, Haley James, to tutor him. She agrees after Nathan has promised her to leave Luke alone in the future.

After winning a game, the team celebrates a party at Nathan's parents' beach house, to which Luke and Haley are also invited. Tree Hill High School has a fathers-for-sons benefit basketball game coming up. Luke doesn't want to take part at first, but finally asks his uncle Keith, who has been there for him and his mother since Luke's birth, if he wants to take part in the game with him as a father substitute. Peyton is in an extremely bad mood at the school and a little later Luke observes how she deliberately runs over several red lights. When he asks her about it, he learns that it is the anniversary of her mother's death, who died in a car accident because she ran over a red light. Luke is also in a bad mood, having found out that Haley is tutoring Nathan, and he fears that she feels more than friendship for him. Brooke and Peyton go to a college party together where a college student puts Peyton knockout drops in her drink, but Brooke manages to save her before anything else can happen to her. Since the two are still minors and are therefore actually not allowed to drink alcohol, Brooke calls Lucas instead of the police, who picks up Peyton and brings him home. He stays there with Brooke overnight to make sure Peyton recovers well from the knockout drops. The next day, Keith takes Karen to the airport, where she kisses him goodbye.

Realizing she made a mistake by rejecting Lucas, Peyton wants to ask him to give her one more chance. When she arrives at his house, however, she realizes that he is now with Brooke.

Since Luke and Brooke are now a couple and spend a lot of time together, Peyton avoids them because she can't stand to see Luke with Brooke. While Karen is in Italy, Deb represents her in her cafe. Since business is not going so well right now, Haley, who is a waiter in Karen's café , has the idea of ​​hosting a karaoke evening. Meanwhile, Dan tries to save his marriage and drives away with Nathan for the weekend because Deb has told him to spend more time with his son. The excursion doesn't go as he imagined. Peyton is delighted when her father, Larry Sawyer, who travels a lot on business, returns home. However, her joy is quickly tarnished when she learns that he has been offered a job in New Zealand that would require him to be abroad for several months at a time. When Larry realizes how much Peyton misses him, he declines the offer so that he can spend more time with his daughter in the future. Nathan eventually decides to give up basketball.

Dan's parents are visiting for his birthday, not knowing that he and Deb have been living apart for a while, and so he persuades Deb and Nathan to show them an ideal world. However, this does not last very long and so some family secrets come to light in the heated atmosphere while eating: Dan voluntarily gave up his basketball career when he decided against having a knee injury treated. He knew that he would not be able to build on his successes in high school and did not want to disappoint his father, who put him under as much pressure as he is now with Nathan. When Nathan realizes that his father wasn't the player he made him believe, he decides to start playing basketball again to prove he's better than Dan ever was. Meanwhile, Peyton learns that her father is missing after a storm on the high seas. When a corpse that matches his description is washed up, Peyton must identify the corpse. Luke accompanies them on the long journey. When it turns out that Peyton's father is still alive, Luke and Peyton's feelings for each other come up again and the two kiss.

Brooke feels guilty about the math test and is about to confess everything, but then she receives an offer from Victoria's Secret that Clothes over Bro's could become part of the Victoria's Secret clothing line PINK . But only if Brooke graduates. To make sure Brooke's dream doesn't break, Rachel makes it look like she cheated on the math test. Deb is in rehab after attempting suicide but is about to be released. To make sure Deb doesn't relapse any more, Haley and Nathan move in with her. While they are cleaning the house of drugs and alcohol to keep Deb from tempting, they find so much liquor that Nathan decides to throw a party to celebrate his State Championship win. At the party, Shelley sleeps with Mouth, who she's recently been dating. She feels guilty for betraying the ideals of the clean teens and breaks off contact with Mouth. An old video showing Nathan playing basketball will be played at the party for entertainment. After a while it turns out that there is something else on the video: a sex tape that Nathan recorded with Brooke while drunk years ago.

At the sight of the sex tape, Peyton is pissed off with Brooke because she was Nathan's girlfriend at the time. She thinks it is hypocritical of Brooke that she made her feel guilty after she and Lukas kissed while Luke was still with Brooke. Haley is also disappointed. To prevent further surprises, she destroys all the home videos in the house and asks Nathan to provide a full list of all the women he has slept with. When he instead gives her a list of all the women he has ever loved with only Haley's name on it, she is placated again. Chase breaks up with Brooke because he was cheated on by his ex-girlfriend and Brooke can no longer trust him. Rachel has been expelled from school and is quietly preparing to leave Tree Hill. Finally the day of the prom has come. Karen and Dan are supervisors and go to the ball together. Peyton doesn't want to go to the ball because of her argument with Brooke, but then he lets Lucas persuade him. When the doorbell rings, it's not Luke who picks you up, but your stalker.

Lucas wants to pick Peyton up for prom, but she doesn't open the door for him. Believing she's still not in the mood for the argument with Brooke, he goes to the ball alone. Not knowing that Peyton is being held in the house by her stalker. He explains that it was him who called her to tell her that he was caught by the police to keep her safe. Brooke finds it funny that Peyton doesn't show up for prom and goes to her house to check on things. There she is also caught by Peyton's stalker. Mouth meanwhile takes Rachel to the airport, where the two spontaneously decide to fly away together. While Lucas waits for Peyton, he talks to Glenda about his book. He says he has trouble remembering the events on the day Keith died. Finally it occurs to him that he saw another person at school before Keith's death. Peyton and Brooke finally manage to break free and join forces to overpower Peyton's stalker. Welded together again through this extreme situation, the two best friends then go to the prom together.

After hanging out with Rachel for a while, Mouth Skills suddenly leaves a message that he is in Honey Grove, Texas and needs help. It is spontaneously decided to go there as a group to pick up Mouth. There they learn that Mouth had to spend the night in a holding cell because he fell asleep on a park bench. Previously, he'd broken up with Rachel because he realized he was just not the "dangerous" guy who skipped the final exams to run away with a girl. Since they can't drive home until their car is repaired, the friends kill time by attending high school prom in Honey Grove with Chris Keller. Meanwhile, Dan finds out who sent him the news that would lead him to confess to Keith's murder: It is Abby Brown, a student, who let Jimmy go that day because she has diabetes. Luke, who saw her that day, also manages to find out who she is.

Luke tracks down Abby and wants her to clarify about Keith's death. Before she can say anything to him, however, he is sent away by Abby's mother, who wants to protect Abby. Peyton is still plagued by memories of Ian Banks, her stalker. She and Brooke visit him in prison to face her fear. They learn that Ian's girlfriend died in a car accident he was responsible for. It broke it. Since Peyton looks very much like his dead girlfriend and is very generous with her personal information on the Internet, he quickly became obsessed with her. Peyton forgives him and can thus close the story. After speculation about betting fraud in the State Championship semifinals, Luke takes the blame so that Nathan's career is not ruined. But he gets a guilty conscience and finally confesses himself. Dan plays with the idea of ​​eliminating the witness Abby. But when he visits her, he only tries to justify his act to her. He then gives this yearbook to Jimmy's mother after he has had friendly messages written in by his classmates. Brooke writes in Chase's yearbook that she still has feelings for him, only to be disappointed to find that Chase has only left a short, meaningless text in her yearbook. Later he confesses to her that he actually wanted to write something romantic too, but didn't dare. Peyton got an internship at Sire Records , but hesitates to take it because she would have to spend the summer away from Lucas. After his involvement in a betting scam comes to light, Duke University takes Nathan away from his scholarship. He desperately tries to join the basketball team at another university, but to no avail. Lucas wants Dan to atone for what he did, but nobody would believe him without Abby. When he sees Dan with his mother, he steals Deb's pistol and threatens him with it. It's going to be too much for Karen; she collapses.

Lucas takes his mother to the hospital where she is found to have had a seizure from the stress associated with her pregnancy and is now in critical condition. In order to be able to treat her better, her daughter is born by caesarean section . Deb finds out Luke stole her gun and wants to know what it was about. He tells her that Dan is Keith's murderer, which she believes him. Since Nathan was not taken from any university, he gets a job in a steel factory. At Haley's request to help Nathan somehow, the newly minted retired Whitey accepts a job as a coach at a small university nearby, which allows him to ensure that Nathan can play there. Brooke feels guilty about Rachel being kicked out of school because of her. She confesses to the principal that it was really she who cheated on the test. But he lets mercy again. However, Dan is no longer able to deny it. Haley goes into labor at the high school graduation ceremony .

While Haley gives birth to her son, Karen's condition worsens. When her heart skips, she meets Keith again in the afterlife. However, he sends them back to their daughter in this world. Meanwhile, Dan goes to the police and confesses his murder to Keith. Since his family has found out the truth, he no longer sees any point in hiding the crime any further. A few weeks later, Karen and her daughter Lilly are doing well, and Nathan and Haley are getting used to parenting. Before everyone moves away to study, there is another big party to celebrate graduation from Tree Hill High. The party is organized by Rachel, who immediately presents Brooke with her diploma. Lucas and Nathan decide to put Dan out of their lives completely and never visit him in prison. In the meantime, he is finally overwhelmed by his feelings of guilt in his cell; he tries to hang himself, but fails. Luke announces that he has accepted a position as Whitey's assistant coach. At the end of the evening everyone goes to the old basketball court by the river and plays against each other. They promise to meet again in four years - after graduating from university.
