Otero County is a county in the state of New Mexico in the United States . The county is in the south of the state and borders Texas . It has 63,797 inhabitants. The county seat is Alamogordo . The county is part of the White Sands National Monument and the Mescalero Apache Reservation .

According to the 2000 census , the county had 62,298 people. There were 22,984 households and 16,801 families. The population density was 4 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 73.71% White, 3.92% African American, 5.80% Native American, 1.17% Asian, 0.13% Pacific Islander, and 11.67% other races Groups; 3.60% were from two or more races.
