Otero County is a county in the state of New Mexico in the United States . The county is in the south of the state and borders Texas . It has 63,797 inhabitants. The county seat is Alamogordo . The county is part of the White Sands National Monument and the Mescalero Apache Reservation .

The county covers an area of 17,165 square kilometers; of which 2 square kilometers (0.1 percent) are water. The county borders the counties in a clockwise direction: Doña Ana County , Sierra County , Lincoln County , Chaves County , Eddy County , Culberson County, Texas, Hudspeth County, Texas, and El Paso County, Texas.

According to the 2000 census , the county had 62,298 people. There were 22,984 households and 16,801 families. The population density was 4 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 73.71% White, 3.92% African American, 5.80% Native American, 1.17% Asian, 0.13% Pacific Islander, and 11.67% other races Groups; 3.60% were from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 32.16% of the population.
Of the 22,984 households, 37.10% had children and adolescents under the age of 18 living with them. 57.50% were married couples living together, 11.80% were single mothers. 26.90% were not families. 23.30% are single households and 8.10% have someone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.66 and the average family size was 3.14.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 29.50% residents under 18 years of age, 9.30% between 18 and 24 years of age, 28.60% between 25 and 44 years of age, 21.00% between 45 and 64 years of age 11.70% were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females there were 99.00 males, and for every 100 females aged 18 and over there were 96.80 males.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 30,861 , and the median income for a family is $ 34,781. Males had a median income of $ 27,657 versus $ 18,470 for females.
