Paddy O'Toole

Paddy O'Toole ( Irish Pádraig Ó Tuathail ; born January 15, 1938 ) is an Irish politician of the Fine Gael and former minister.

biography

O'Toole first completed a teacher training course and then worked as a teacher at state schools (National School).

He began his political career as a Fine Gael candidate in 1973 with the nomination for a member of the Senate ( Seanad Éireann ) by Prime Minister ( Taoiseach ) Liam Cosgrave . In 1977 he was elected for the first time to the Deputy ( Teachta Dála ) of the House of Commons ( Dáil Éireann ). There he represented the constituency of Mayo-East until his defeat in the 1987 general election .

Between June 1981 and March 1982 he was Minister for the Irish-Speaking Territories ( Gaeltacht ) in the first government of Prime Minister Garret FitzGerald . When FitzGerald was again Prime Minister on December 14, 1982, O'Toole was appointed Minister of Fisheries and Forestry. As part of a government reshuffle, he was appointed Defense Minister and again Minister for the Gaeltacht in February 1986 . He held these offices until the end of FitzGerald's tenure on March 10, 1987. Between January and March 1987 he was also Minister for Tourism, Fisheries and Forestry.

After leaving the House of Commons because of his electoral defeat, Taoiseach FitzGerald nominated him as a member of the Senate on February 20, 1987 in order to ensure his parliamentary ties. He also resigned from the Senate on March 10, 1987.
