Penne is an Italian commune with 12,004 inhabitants in the province of Pescara in the Abruzzo region and is a member of the association I borghi più belli d'Italia (The Most Beautiful Places in Italy).

The neighboring municipalities are: Arsita ( TE ), Bisenti (TE), Castiglione Messer Raimondo (TE), Castilenti (TE), Civitella Casanova , Elice , Farindola , Loreto Aprutino , Montebello di Bertona and Picciano .

history

The name Penne is derived from the town of Pinna . Pliny mentions Pinna as the capital of the Vestines . For loyalty at the time of the alliance war (bellum sociale), the city was made a Municipium and thus received Roman citizenship.

Attractions

The whole old town, which has retained its original character in the center, is a single sight. Particularly noteworthy are

  • the cathedral on the highest point of the city
  • the Diocesan Museum nearby; it also serves as a museum for important ancient and medieval exhibits
  • Porta San Francesco, the baroque entrance portal into the formerly walled city.

Every Saturday there is a weekly market in Penne.

In the municipality of vines are varieties Montepulciano for the DOC - wine Montepulciano d'Abruzzo grown.
