The river has its source in the Northern Urals near the border between the Komi Republic and the Khanty and Mansi Autonomous Okrug / Ugra , initially flows west, then turns north, reaches the town of Pechora and enters the north Russian lowlands, which are still slightly hilly here a. A little further north, the Pechora near Ust-Ussa takes in the water of the Ussa coming from the northeast . Then it bends west and reaches Ust-Zilma . From then on, the Pechora turns again to the north and flows through Narjan-Mar , the capital of the Nenets Autonomous Okrug at the beginning or south of its river delta . Ultimately, their water pours into the Barents Sea .
The cities of Troitsko-Pechorsk , Wuktyl and Pechora lie on the river. The Pechora is navigable , but it is covered with ice for most of the year .
The 322,000 km² catchment area of the Pechora is bounded in the east by the Polar Urals and the northern Urals to the south. In the south and west the Timan Ridge forms the watershed to the river systems of the Northern Dvina and Mesen . The transition area between the Timan Ridge and the Urals separates the Pechora and Volga catchment areas . In the Pechora lowlands around Vorkuta there is a large coal mining area with estimated reserves of up to 350 billion tons of coal.
