Phillip Allen Sharp (born June 6, 1944 in Falmouth / Pendleton , Kentucky ) is an American chemist , molecular biologist , geneticist and Nobel Prize winner (1993) .

Sharp studied math and chemistry at Union College, Barbourville , Kentucky, and received his PhD in chemistry from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1969 . He was a post-doc at Caltech and the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory with James D. Watson . In 1974 Salvador Luria brought him to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology , where he became Professor of Biology (since 1999 Institute Professor). At MIT he was director of the Center for Cancer Research from 1985 to 1991, head of the Biology Faculty from 1991 to 1999 and director of the McGovern Institute for Brain Research from 2000 to 2004.

In 1980 he received the National Academy of Sciences Award in Molecular Biology , in 1986 the Alfred P. Sloan, Jr. Prize and a Gairdner Foundation International Award , in 1988 the Albert Lasker Award for Basic Medical Research and the Louisa Gross Horwitz Prize and in 1993 together with Richard J. Roberts the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine "for their identification of the discontinuous structure of some genetic make-up of cell organisms". These mosaic genes contain so-called intron segments, which do not code for protein segments but are removed when the primary transcript is spliced . This can be done in different ways, so that identical sections of DNA can encode different proteins.

The American Philosophical Society , of which he has been a member since 1991, awarded Sharp with its Benjamin Franklin Medal in 1999 . In 1983 both the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the National Academy of Sciences accepted him as a member.

In 1993, Sharp received the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. In 2002 he received the Biotechnology Heritage Award and in 2020 the AACR Award for Lifetime Achievement in Cancer Research .

He is the co-founder of various biotechnology companies ( Biogen , Alnylam Pharmaceuticals and - the one that has since been sold - Magen Biosciences).
