Rave Un2 the Joy Fantastic
(1999)
Rave In2 the Joy Fantastic The Rainbow Children
(2001)

Rave In2 the Joy Fantastic ( English for swarming in the fantastic joy ) is a remix album by the American musician Prince . It was released on April 29, 2001 by his music label NPG Records and was only available for purchase through his website at the time. The remix album is based on the album Rave Un2 the Joy Fantastic (1999) and contains a previously unreleased song called Beautiful Strange . Although he had resumed his stage name "Prince" in May 2000, he published Rave In2 the Joy Fantastic under his unpronounceable symbol as a pseudonym .

The music belongs to the genres of funk , pop , R&B and rock music . Apart from additional lyrics in a few songs, this is identical to that of Rave Un2 the Joy Fantastic . Ani DiFranco , Chuck D , Clare Fischer , Eve , Gwen Stefani , Maceo Parker and Sheryl Crow are again performing as guest musicians .

In 2001, Prince did not do any noteworthy music promotion for Rave In2 the Joy Fantastic and since the album was not listed in the international music charts at the time, it had no way of achieving gold or platinum status . Mass media interest in the remix album was very low; It was not until after Prince's death in April 2016 that it received isolated reviews and received mostly negative reviews. The song Beautiful Strange was mostly praised.

On April 26, 2019 The Prince Estate brought (dt .: The Princeton discount ) the remix album officially republication out again, which was ranked then isolated in the international charts.

Emergence

Prince announced the remix album Rave In2 the Joy Fantastic on November 9, 1999, the day Rave Un2 the Joy Fantastic was released . Originally he wanted to release it on March 9, 2000 with the major label Arista Records , with which he was under contract at the time. But out of annoyance about Clive Davis , Prince postponed the planned date and finally released the remix album in April 2001 on his own label NPG Records .

Prince finished all songs from early 1999 to early 2000 in his Paisley Park Studio in Chanhassen . The first track was Tangerine , the last songs the four remix versions of Rave In2 the Joy Fantastic , Undisputed (The Moneyapolis Mix) , Hot Wit U (Nasty Girl Remix) and Man 'O' War (Remix) .

Prince originally recorded the previously unreleased piece Beautiful Strange in mid-1998 at his Paisley Park Studio and released this version on his video album of the same name in August 1999. But in late 1999 he reworked the song and released a slightly modified version on the remix album.

Prince removed the two songs Everyday Is a Winding Road and Strange but True , as well as the three transitions segue ( Miles Davis 199?) , Segue and segue (1,800 New Funk Advertisement) from the original tracklist.

Design of the cover

Art director and photographer Steve Parke (* 1963) was again responsible for the album design. The front cover is very similar to that of Rave Un2 the Joy Fantastic ; only the album title has been changed from “Un2” to “In2” and Prince's eyes look in the direction of the camera, which is not the case with the other front cover. The back cover is, apart from the printed tracklist of the remix album, identical to Rave Un2 the Joy Fantastic .

In contrast to Rave Un2 the Joy Fantastic , Prince wanted to equip the remix album with a booklet . The booklet has 20 pages and contains seven photos of him. Among other things, a very similar photo of the poster is shown, but Prince's hands were not digitally edited by Parke afterwards. In addition, Prince is tilting his head a little. There is also a photo of him that Parke took in Chanhassen's “Minnesota Landscape Arboretum” and shows Prince sitting on a bench surrounded by trees. When Parke was finishing this shot, Prince asked him skeptically if the photo wasn't too dark, which Parke denied. But Prince remained skeptical and said, "How about if it's too dark, you wash my car for a year", whereupon Parke asked Prince's commitment in case the photographer was not wrong. "Are you going to keep your job," Prince replied jokingly. Ultimately, Parke had lightened the photo a little later, "just in case," as he also said with a wink.

The booklet also features a photo of the dancer Desray Junca, who appears in the music video for Hot Wit U (Nasty Girl Remix) and who, after Prince's death, claimed to have had an affair with him from 1999 to 2001. In addition, all lyrics can be read, although the additional lyrics are not printed in some songs.

In the liner notes , Prince thanks Mayte Garcia again , from whom he had been divorced for eleven months when the album was released. He also thanks Manuela Testolini again, whom he married in December 2001. Also in the liner notes is Prince's reference to the killing of lambs for people's desire for soft woolen clothing .

The copyright mark on the CD and the booklet is dated from 2000, although the remix album was released in April 2001.

music

The music on the album belongs to the genres of dance-pop , funk , soul , contemporary R&B , pop music and rock music . Prince re-recorded the five songs Rave In2 the Joy Fantastic , Undisputed (The Moneyapolis Mix) , The Greatest Romance Ever Sold , Hot Wit U (Nasty Girl Remix) and Man 'O' War (Remix) with musical elements that were in the respective versions on Rave Un2 the Joy Fantastic are not available.

Maceo Parker in 2000

The title track Rave In2 the Joy Fantastic has a techno- inspired beat and Prince added additional lyrics . He re-recorded his singing in Undisputed (The Moneyapolis Mix) and integrated some of the rap passages he performed . He left out the chorus "NPG, get rowdy now", Chuck D's raps remained identical. The extended version of The Greatest Romance Ever Sold is a compilation of the original album version and the Adam & Eve remix with rapper Eve . Hot Wit U (Nasty Girl Remix) and Man 'O' War (Remix) Prince also re-recorded and added additional lyrics; Hot Wit U (Nasty Girl Remix) has, among other things, text passages from the song he wrote Nasty Girl , which was published in 1982 by his then side project Vanity 6 . Man 'O' War (Remix) contains the newly created line of text “How did Lenny say: I got to get away, I got to get away”, an allusion to the song Fly Away (1998) by Lenny Kravitz .

Tangerine can be heard in the original version and at the end has an instrumental playing that is 42 seconds longer. The version of The Sun, the Moon and Stars is also the original version of the song, which at the end has a sound of the sea produced by synthesizers , which is only three seconds longer . Also Prettyman , again as a hidden track placed is of the playing time ago identical to the previous version, up to minute 4:24 of the groove for 1:12 minutes returns. Maceo Parker plays a few saxophone solos, the song slowly fades out and finally ends with the sound of someone smashing the CD. Baby Knows is essentially identical until, from minute 1:49, Kip Blackshire can be heard for ten seconds with subtle background vocals over Prince's guitar playing. The song ends like on Rave Un2 the Joy Fantastic , but returns after a pause of two seconds and Prince added another 30-second instrumental play, including background vocals from Blackshire.

The only new song on the remix album, Beautiful Strange , is a plaintive and reserved number with no recognizable melody . Prince blurs the line between a ballad and a rock song; he plays guitar solo charged and licks before a sparse backdrop composed of a slow damped pattern of a drum machine , synth bass and some plucked Bass consists. The lyrics are obscure and spiritual , but seem to concern the importance of finding answers and the inadequacy of the words. For example, Prince sings: "Words that are so strange that only the mind can say". He encourages you to “dive into your soul” to find “the light” that “shines forever”. Compared to the version on the video album, Beautiful Strange differs only slightly; the former has a slightly longer guitar lead-in segment before Prince's vocals begin. In May 1999 Madonna released the song of almost the same name, Beautiful Stranger, from the soundtrack and film Austin Powers - Spy in a secret missionary position . When Prince was asked by a fan about a possible release date of Beautiful Strange on his website at the time as part of the “Question of the Week” , this prompted him to comment on Madonna with a wink: “And tell the girl to stop, mine Steal title! :) ".

The four songs So Far, So Pleased (with Gwen Stefani ), Eye Love U, but Eye Don't Trust U Anymore (with Ani DiFranco ), Silly Game and Wherever U Go, Whatever U Do are identical on both albums.

Music videos

Mel B in 2011

Prince produced two music videos for songs by Rave In2 the Joy Fantastic, Beautiful Strange and Hot Wit U (Nasty Girl Remix) . The music video for Beautiful Strange can be seen on the video album of the same name, which Prince released on August 24, 1999 and is only available on VHS then and now (as of 2020) . It begins, as Mel B of the Spice Girls in a black stretch limousine type Lincoln Town Car leaving the Paisley Park studio where they had previously interviewed Prince. Neither the two nor any other person can be seen in the video, but the context of the video album shows that the interview is over and Mel B gets into the limo. The music video is then shown exclusively graphically using computer animation ; gray clouds pass over a permanently blue sky. A sunrise can be seen in the middle of the video. The lyrics of Beautiful Strange floats chronologically Prince 'Singing in the blue sky.

The music video for Hot Wit U (Nasty Girl Remix) was shot by Prince in his Paisley Park Studio in late 1999 and he himself worked as a director. The video also features the dancer Desray Junca, who can already be seen in the video for The Greatest Romance Ever Sold . Among other things, Junca lolls on a bed wearing only panties and a bra, rubbing herself with bath foam. Premiere of Hot Wit U (Nasty Girl Remix) was on 24 May 2000 on the streaming media channel RealNetworks , ie a year before the release of the remix album. Since 2018 the video can be viewed posthumously on YouTube via Prince's user account , managed by The Prince Estate.

reception

Press

In 2001 mass media interest in Rave In2 the Joy Fantastic was extremely low because the remix album did not go on sale. While it is mentioned in several books about Prince, reviews are few to be found there either. It wasn't until after Prince's death in April 2016 that it was occasionally reviewed and received mostly negative ratings.

Iman Lababedi from the website rocknyclive.com awarded the grade “B” in November 2016, with “A” being the highest grade. In her opinion it was "not a bad idea" to release the remix album because it was better than Rave Un2 the Joy Fantastic . The versions of Man 'O' War (remix) and Baby Knows increased the tempo and the song Beautiful Strange was "a good addition". Still, “nobody” would “mistake the remix album for a masterpiece,” she said.

Matt Thorne, British music journalist and author of several Prince books, was disappointed with the remix album. Although Beautiful Strange is one of the best Prince songs, which mainly gets "strength" from Prince's guitar playing, the extended version of The Greatest Romance Ever Sold and the remix of Hot Wit U did not convince him. The title track "finally destroys the magic of the original song" and Thorne even described it as "horrific". He was also disappointed that Prince had removed his cover version of Everyday Is a Winding Road from the tracklist.

Jason Draper, also a music journalist and author of several Prince books, was also very reluctant to praise. He described the song Beautiful Strange as "a gloomy soundscape reminiscent of some of the stranger moments on Come " from 1994. In conclusion, he drew that the remix album was "slightly more interesting" than Rave Un2 the Joy Fantatsic .

Charts

Rave In2 the Joy Fantastic was not listed in the international music charts in 2001 because it was only available for purchase through Prince's website at the time, NPG Music Club.com. Nothing has been publicly known about the sales figures. It wasn't until 2019 that the remix album made it into the charts when it was released again; For example, it was ranked 91st in Belgium and, as Ultimate Rave, 57th in Spain and 85th in the Netherlands.
