Regional banks and savings banks (Switzerland)
The Swiss regional banks and savings banks are one of the so-called banking groups, as defined by the Swiss National Bank . They are mainly active in the savings and mortgage business and usually cover a geographically restricted area. Most regional banks and savings banks were founded in the 19th century and have retained their local character. They are often organized in the form of a cooperative or, as a stock corporation, are largely owned by their own customers or the local population. Most of them are members of the Association of Swiss Regional Banks (VSRB) founded in Bern on May 14, 2018 . According to an annual study in 2018, one of the greatest challenges facing Swiss regional banks was interest margins and overregulation, while the regional bank directors saw diversification into new business areas as the greatest opportunity.
