Roosevelt County is a county in the state of New Mexico in the United States . 19,846 people live here. The county seat is Portales .

The county covers an area of 6,358 square kilometers; 16 square kilometers of this are water. The county borders the counties in a clockwise direction: Bailey County, Texas, Cochran County, Texas, Lea County , Chaves County , De Baca County , Quay County, and Curry County .

The county had a population of 18,018 as of the 2000 census . There were 6,639 households and 4,541 families. The population density was 3 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 74.14% White, 1.65% African American, 1.10% Native American, 0.62% Asian, 0.07% Pacific Islander, and 19.76% other races Groups; 2.65% were from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 33.29% of the population.
Of the 6,639 households, 35.50% had children and adolescents under the age of 18 living with them. 53.00% were married couples living together, 11.70% were single mothers. 31.60% were not families. 24.70% are single households and 9.10% have someone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.60 and the average family size was 3.14.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 28.10% residents under 18 years of age, 16.00% between 18 and 24 years of age, 25.50% between 25 and 44 years of age, 18.30% between 45 and 64 years of age 12.10% were 65 years of age or over. The average age was 30 years. For every 100 females there were 96.50 males, and for every 100 females aged 18 and over there were 93.50 males.
