Ruslan Schamilowitsch Tschagajew ( Russian Руслан Шамилович Чагаев ; English transcription: Ruslan Chagaev ; Tatar Ruslan Şamil ulı Çağayev ; born October 19, 1978 in Andijon , Uzbek SSR , Soviet Union ) . Boxer is a former Tatar of Uzbek origin. He was two-time WBA heavyweight champion.
Amateur career
Chagayev's first international success was the 1995 heavyweight victory at the Asian Championships in Tashkent . At the Junior World Championships in Havana in 1996 , he won bronze. In the same year he took part in the Olympic Games in Atlanta for Uzbekistan , but failed in the first fight due to a point defeat at the later bronze medalist Luan Krasniqi .
In October 1997 he became amateur heavyweight world champion in Budapest, defeating Félix Savón on points (14: 4) in the final . This title was stripped from him a little later, however, as he had previously contested two professional fights in the USA. In order to keep his amateur status, these fights were declared to be exhibition fights. Nevertheless, Chagayev received a one-year ban from the world amateur boxing association AIBA .
After this suspension he won the 1998 Asian Games in Bangkok . In February 1999 he met Savón again in the final of an amateur tournament in Plovdiv , Bulgaria and won on points (7: 2), but lost to him a little later in August 1999 at the amateur world championship in Houston in the quarter-finals 1: 9. At the Olympic Games in Sydney in 2000 , Chagayev was eliminated in the quarter-finals against the Georgian bronze medalist Vladimir Chanturia .
In June 2001 he was in Belfast , Northern Ireland amateur world champion in super heavyweight; he defeated the Ukrainian Olexij Masikin prematurely in the final . For this success he received $ 100,000 from President Karimov of Uzbekistan .
Professional career
After his "first" professional debut in 1997, Ruslan Chagayev finally turned professional in 2001, initially in the USA. After he had fallen out with his US promoter, he was in 2003 in Germany by Klaus-Peter Kohl for his universe - boxing stable contracted. In his twentieth professional fight he won the WBO and WBA Intercontinental titles by a controversial point victory over the undefeated Wolodymyr Wirtschis and then defended them by knockout against Michael Sprott .
In November 2006, he defeated the American John Ruiz on points in an elimination match for the position of the WBA mandatory challenger . On April 14, 2007 he finally won the world champion belt according to the WBA version by winning points over the 33 cm taller Nikolai Walujew .
Chagayev was to box on October 13, 2007 in Moscow in an unification fight against the then reigning Russian WBO world champion Sultan Ibragimov . The fight was called off by Chagayev, the reason given was a stomach disease. As a result, there were contradicting statements in the media: According to the September 2007 edition of BoxSport, he suffered from hepatitis , while at the same time it was reported on his promoter's website that the boxer had survived an "acute inflammation" and was in the process of being back in training. Chagayev successfully defended his title on January 19, 2008 with an unspectacular victory over the 40-year-old Briton Matt Skelton .
Chagayev was initially supposed to fight a rematch against Nikolai Valujew in Oberhausen on May 31, but the fight was postponed to July 5, 2008 because the Uzbek was infected with a virus. Chagayev's problems with his left eye as a result of retinal detachment were also reported in 2001. But Chagayev also had to cancel the duel against Valujew in Halle / Westphalia planned for July 2008 because of a ruptured Achilles tendon during preparation. Since he had to cancel this compulsory defense for the second time, the official WBA title was revoked and the status of the so-called "Champion in recess" (world champion waiting) was awarded. This meant that by June 26, 2009 at the latest, he had the right to challenge the then reigning WBA world champion directly.
In the first fight after this illness, Chagayev competed on February 7, 2009 in the Rostock city hall against the undefeated Costa Rican Carl Davis Drumond . In the third round he suffered a head collision with a severely bleeding laceration over his left eye. Because of this, the fight was stopped after the sixth round, the score sheets were evaluated according to the rules and Chagayev declared the winner of a so-called technical decision.
During Chagayev's injury break, Nikolai Valuyev had won the WBA title again, so Chagayev would face the Russian in his next fight to determine the sole WBA world champion. However, the third attempt at a rematch, which was scheduled for May 30, 2009 in the Finnish capital Helsinki , also failed because the Finnish boxing association refused to allow him to fight for health reasons. Chagayev carries the hepatitis B antigen from a previous hepatitis B illness . The virus concentration in his blood values, which according to some German doctors is not infectious, however, was classified by the Finnish association as sufficient for the existence of a risk of infection.
Since a few days later the Briton David Haye canceled his world championship fight against Wladimir Klitschko planned for June 20, 2009 due to a training injury, Universum Box-Promotion and Klitschko management agreed on a fight in the Gelsenkirchen Veltins-Arena , the stadium of the football Bundesliga club FC Schalke 04 . With the WBA not classifying the fight as a world championship, Chagayev entered the ring as a challenger to Klitschko's IBF and WBO titles. In the fight against the Ukrainian, however, he was largely without a chance and fell in the second round for the first time in his professional career. After the ninth round, he or his trainer Michael Timm gave up the fight after many heavy hits.
After the defeat, the WBA Chagayev recognized the title of "waiting world champion". In the association's ranking list, he was initially ranked first, but moved back to third position after the following lengthy inactivity. The WBA finally ordered an elimination match between Chagayev and the Australian Kali Meehan , who was second at the time, to determine a mandatory challenger for the WBA World Championship. In September 2009 Chagayev moved from Timm's training group to Magomed Schaburow , with whom he prepared for the fight on May 22, 2010 in the Rostock town hall. There he defeated the 40-year-old Meehan, who had not been in the ring for 21 months before this encounter, over twelve rounds on points and thus once again acquired the right to box for the WBA belt.
Chagayev lost on August 27, 2011 in Erfurt against Alexander Powetkin the fight for the vacant WBA championship unanimously on points (112-116, 113-117, 113-117).
Chagayev played his first fight after losing to Powetkin on January 28, 2012 at the Elysee Hotel in Hamburg against Kertson Manswell. Chagayev won on points. He decided the next three fights by knockout, the fourth ended with a point win.
On July 6, 2014 he won the title of regular world champion of the WBA again in Grozny by winning points over the American Fres Oquendo. After a one-year break, he met the German-Italian Francesco Pianeta on July 11, 2015 in the GETEC Arena in Magdeburg . He won this fight by knockout in the first round. Eight months later he met the Australian Lucas Browne in Kolisey in Grozny . He lost this fight through TKO in the 10th round, but Browne found the doping agent Clenbuterol in the A-sample, so that the fight was not subsequently scored.
Due to a lack of payment at the boxing association WBA (according to other information because of his refusal to take part in a compulsory defense against Oquendo, who was accused of doping), Chagayev lost his world title again on July 26, 2016. A short time later, Ruslan Chagayev ended his career due to persistent health problems with his eyes.
