Location of the southern part of Euskirchen

The Euskirchener Südstadt was originally the quarter between Münstereifeler and Billiger Straße in the south of Euskirchen . As the city expanded, more and more adjacent streets were added to the southern part of the city. With a few exceptions, the Südstadt is a purely residential area and is also - as is often the case with other areas in the south of larger cities - as the noblest and most expensive residential area in the urban area of the core city of Euskirchen. The Südstadt in Euskirchen is also considered to be one of the quarters with the strongest identity of its own and a resulting particularly strong sense of belonging, but also a certain awareness of demarcation among the residents. Despite the main purpose of the Südstadt as a residential area, there are also some larger and very important institutions for the city of Euskirchen and the surrounding region , of which the Marienhospital Euskirchen is probably the most important one.

geography

location

Since the Südstadt is not an independent district or a cartographic district , the area cannot be precisely delimited. In general, however, the area between the railway line of the Eifelbahn and the EURO-Park industrial area , including the "Baumviertel" west of the Mitbach, is referred to as Südstadt in regional usage. Besides Billiger Straße, Münstereifeler Straße is the largest main road in the southern part of the city.

Delimitation to the planning area "City Süd"

Despite a certain similarity in names, the plans for the development of the area south behind Euskirchen train station, which has been largely used as a PR park , which has been discussed since the 1990s, must be clearly delimited from the Euskirchen Südstadt. This area, which has recently become known under the planning title "City South", has so far - with the exception of the parking garage planning, which has now become more specific - only came more than one of many possible future visions. Despite the geographically conceivable affiliation of a possibly future "City Süd" to the Südstadt, the currently largely undeveloped planning area is no longer the "classic" Südstadt of, also due to the possible mixed development of commercial and residential buildings, as well as a larger commuter parking garage Attributable to Euskirchen. Rather, due to the more direct connection to the pedestrian zone as the main shopping street of Euskirchen via the pedestrian tunnel at the train station that was redesigned in the 2010s, it seems more appropriate to belong to the city center of Euskirchen.

history

With the construction of the extremely artfully designed old grammar school on Billiger Straße around 1900, a change in planning from the previous southern part of the city to an upscale residential area should be made. The starting point here was a change in the Münstereifeler Straße, which was newly built between 1839 and 1841 and led out of town to the south with the long-term destination Bad Münstereifel . The special feature of this redesign plan was the construction of magnificent villas as well as the creation of an upscale terraced house development with the small front gardens that were often common at that time . However, this new development only affected the upper part of Münstereifeler Straße. As early as the 1930s, the street already existed as a boulevard with avenue trees and a special width and therefore differed significantly from all other streets in the otherwise heavily industrialized urban area of Euskirchen. The renovation and expansion of Münstereifeler Straße in the upper part, as well as the construction of the old grammar school, can therefore also be seen as the origin of today's southern urban area.

Living

Despite the rather upscale residential area and the clear dominance of single-family houses, there are also numerous simpler rental properties there . In line with its strong growth from the 1960s onwards, more and more smaller houses were built here in the style of the typical architecture of the early post-war period. In addition, there are very elegant historical villa buildings in the southern part of the city - albeit only a few - which are mainly to be found in the area of Münstereifeler Straße.

In addition, the southern part of the city has seen significant expansions in the past few decades in the form of larger new building areas. The most recent development areas are to the right and left of the Mitbach , namely in the area of the so-called "Mitbachaue" and the so-called "Disternicher Auel". A further larger expansion of the Südstadt, which is directly adjacent to the outskirts, to the south is quite conceivable as a result of the larger arable land directly adjacent to it in the direction of the village of Euskirchen-Billig .

Public institutions

schools

One of the larger schools is the Matthias-Hagen-Schule , located directly opposite the Euskirchen tax office , which was still used as a special needs school for the city of Euskirchen until it moved to the neighboring town of Euskirchen-Kuchenheim in summer 2014 . The imposing historic school building from 1907 is one of the few large buildings get in the core city Euskirchen the style of the so-called. Neorenaissance - a popular style at that time many common types of historicism . Until it was moved to the northern part of Euskirchen in 1968, the building was the seat of the old Emil Fischer grammar school . Before that, the grammar school was called Ksn until 1937 . Auguste Victoria High School . However, nothing has yet been made public about another use of the historic building after the special needs school moved away.

In addition, there is also the LVR Max Ernst School as a school for the deaf, which is run by the Rhineland Regional Council (LVR) . The facility emerged in the post-war period from the "Deaf and Mute Institute for the Disabled Catholic Deaf and Dumb" founded in 1912. In addition to 120 school places, the institution with a supraregional catchment area has also offered accommodation for 50 deaf-mutes with physical ailments since it was founded. The originally 26 acre area also included a military hospital, its own gym and a chapel. Today, after a major renovation, the older parts of the building, which were used as a school until the 1990s, are home to an exclusive senior citizens' residence. In addition, after the senior citizens' apartments went into operation, a supermarket was built on the site behind the historic old building.

Other schools in the southern part of the city are the Catholic Primary School Franziskusschule (Euskirchen) and the second Euskirchener Förderschule Hans-Verbeek-Schule , which focuses on intellectual development.

Kindergartens

The Südstadt is home to two kindergartens , on the one hand the Catholic Kindergarten St. Matthias Euskirchen , which is the oldest institution of its kind in the Südstadt in the immediate vicinity of the old and new Franciscan monastery . In addition, there is also a municipal kindergarten, which was only built in the 1990s near the city forest.

Healthcare

In the southern city, the most important public institutions of health care, namely established in the postwar period are new Hospital St. Mary's Hospital Euskirchen , which serves as the successor institution to the closure and demolition of the old hospital in the Euskirchener downtown.

On the hospital grounds there is also a medical center that was only built after the year 2000 and the emergency practice of the statutory health insurance physicians , which has also only recently been established .

There are also numerous private medical practices in Euskirchen's Südstadt .

Seniors

The senior citizens 'home "Carpe Diem", which emerged from the old building of the deaf school on the Eifelring, and the senior citizens' and nursing home, the "Caritas Pflegestation Euskirchen", located near the hospital, should be mentioned as senior facilities. However, both institutions have not existed in the Euskirchen Südstadt that long, but are more recent.

According to the more recent definition, the Euskirchener Südstadt also includes the senior citizens' apartments , which were completed in 2008 and are located on the site of the former Frings malt factory on Münstereifeler Straße, directly on the embankment of the Federal Railroad . According to the more recent understanding of the area, the embankment serves as the current imaginary geographical boundary of the southern part of the city. While the senior citizens 'apartments are partly located in the stately villa of the company owners on the property and in new buildings, a hospice was also built for the first time in Euskirchen by 2011 on the site further back , which also belongs to the same foundation as the senior citizens' apartments , namely the Marienhospital Foundation . The former factory site is to be expanded and converted into a modern "generation park" with numerous other buildings over the next few years. The former malt factory in Euskirchen existed from 1869 until well into the 1990s. Until the 1960s, the company owners also operated a building materials and coal trade at the factory site.

Authorities

Another larger public institution in the southern part of Euskirchen is the Euskirchen tax office , which was last extensively expanded in the 1970s with a larger extension in the typical architectural style of the time. The spatial responsibility of this state-owned facility only extends to the area of the northern district of Euskirchen while the southern district is the local responsibility of the Schleiden tax office .

Until after the war, the old agricultural office of Euskirchen was located on Münstereifeler Straße , which is now in a new building in the northern part of the city. The former old official building was converted into a residential complex with exclusive condominiums at the end of the 1990s.

church

The Catholic Church , along with other religious institutions, is also represented in the southern part of the city with the subsidiary church of St. Matthias as the largest religious community. The originally independent parish church has belonged to the St. Martin parish association in the core town of Euskirchen since the mid-2000s .

The former new Franciscan monastery and the so-called "Forum" as a larger universal event space including a smaller library are located directly adjacent to the church building . The premises of the former monastery , which had been completely empty and unused since 2010 , were only used in 2015 for a meaningful church use . In the spring of 2016, after a comprehensive renovation of the building, nuns from Africa will gradually be able to move into the 13 living rooms.

leisure

Parks

Larger parks in the southern part of the city include the Schillerpark Euskirchen , built in the 1920s, with a duck pond, and the "Ortholz" municipal forest . The central point in the city forest is at the so-called "Schillerstein", which can be found in a forest clearing with a larger fountain on the east side of the city forest near the city forest restaurant. For a long time, the city forest, which was only known as wild wood, was only opened around 1900 a. a. designed accordingly as a leisure forest with paths and benches.

Sports

In the immediate vicinity of the Hans Verbeek School there is also a larger sports facility with a soccer field and a large soccer and athletics stadium , which is officially called the Städtische Sportanlage im Auel and is popularly referred to as "Im Auel" for short. The sports facility is also used as a school sports center for the gymnasium Marienschule (Euskirchen) right next to it , which in turn is located directly to the west of the Eifelbahn tracks and is therefore directly adjacent to the assumed area of the Euskirchen Südstadt. Despite an otherwise strong social connection to the Südstadt, the Marienschule (Euskirchen) can no longer be assigned to the Südstadt.

At the edge of the city forest there are two larger tennis courts. Decades ago, the city forest itself was also equipped with the appropriate facilities as a fitness trail .

Culture

One of the larger leisure facilities in the southern part of the city is the Comedia Euskirchen event center , which emerged from an old monastery in the late 1990s and includes a large hall with a stage. The old Franciscan monastery built in 1926 is popularly referred to in Euskirchen as "little monastery". Based on this name, the association Kultur Initiative Klösterchen (KIK) has been offering an upscale cultural program u. a. from music, literature and other diverse artistic performances.

carnival

At Carnival there are in the southern part Euskirchener since 1990 also has its own carnival, which is usually on the Saturday before Carnival Monday u. a. takes place in the area around the parish church of St. Matthias and on Münstereifeler Straße. The initiative for this goes back to an idea from members of the parish of St. Matthias in 1984, who founded an interest group especially for this purpose - the "IG Südstadtkarneval". The carnival prince of the southern part of Euskirchen has not been called "prince" since 1992, as is generally the case, but only "regent", as there is already a "prince" for the entire city during carnival in the core city of Euskirchen.
