San Juan County is a county in the US state of Washington . 14,077 people live here. The county seat is Friday Harbor on San Juan Island .
geography
The county covers most of the San Juan Islands , a group of islands that separates the Strait of Juan de Fuca from the Strait of Georgia , between Canada's Vancouver Island and the mainland.
The county covers an area of 1,609 square kilometers, of which 453 square kilometers are land and 1,156 square kilometers (71.84 percent) are water. It is the smallest county in Washington by area.
history
The archipelago was disputed between Great Britain and the United States from 1846 to 1872, which led to the Swine Conflict in 1859 .

The county had a population of 14,077 people as of the 2000 census . There were 6,466 households and 4,015 families. The population density was 31 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 94.99% White, 0.26% African American, 0.83% Native American, 0.89% Asian, 0.09% Pacific Islander, and 0.91% other races Groups; 2.04% were from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 2.40% of the population.
Of the 6,466 households, 22.90% had children and adolescents under the age of 18 living with them. 51.80% were married couples living together, 6.90% were single mothers. 37.90% were not families. 30.60% are single households and 10.70% have someone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.16 and the average family size was 2.65 people.
For the entire county, the population was 19.10% under the age of 18, 4.50% between 18 and 24 years, 21.70% between 25 and 44 years, 35.70% between 45 and 64 years 19.00% were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 47 years. For every 100 females there were 95.10 males, and for every 100 females aged 18 and over there were 93.00 males.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 43,491 , and the median income for a family is $ 51,835. Males had a median income of $ 36,250 versus $ 26,516 for females. The per capita income was $ 30,603. 9.20% of the population and 6.00% of families are below the poverty line. 12.40% of them were under 18 years of age and 3.10% were 65 years of age or older.
