San Juan County is a county in the US state of Washington . 14,077 people live here. The county seat is Friday Harbor on San Juan Island .

The county covers most of the San Juan Islands , a group of islands that separates the Strait of Juan de Fuca from the Strait of Georgia , between Canada's Vancouver Island and the mainland.

The county covers an area of ​​1,609 square kilometers, of which 453 square kilometers are land and 1,156 square kilometers (71.84 percent) are water. It is the smallest county in Washington by area.

The archipelago was disputed between Great Britain and the United States from 1846 to 1872, which led to the Swine Conflict in 1859 .

The county had a population of 14,077 people as of the 2000 census . There were 6,466 households and 4,015 families. The population density was 31 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 94.99% White, 0.26% African American, 0.83% Native American, 0.89% Asian, 0.09% Pacific Islander, and 0.91% other races Groups; 2.04% were from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 2.40% of the population.
