Santos Limited (originally South Australia Northern Territory Oil Search) is Australia's largest oil and gas exploration company. The company is based in Adelaide .

history

  • Santos was founded on March 18, 1954 in Adelaide and in the same year acquired federal rights in South Australia and Queensland
  • 1959 gas was detected in the Cooper basin (field Innamincka 1)
  • In 1963 the first major gas discovery took place in the Cooper Basin (Gidgealpa 2)
  • Another gas field (Moomba) was discovered in 1966. With the two fields the needs of South Australia could be covered, so that the construction of a pipeline was decided
  • In 1969 the 790 kilometer long pipeline to Adelaide was completed and the first gas was sold. The first customer was the South Australian Gas Company
  • In 1970 crude oil was first found in the Cooper Basin (Tirrawarra 1).
  • The South Australian Cooper Basin Unit Agreement of 1975 enabled Santos to deliver gas to New South Wales .
  • 1978 - 24 years after it was founded - a dividend was distributed to shareholders for the first time .
  • In 1984 Reef Oil and Alliance Oil were taken over, in 1987 Vamgas and Latec Investments.
  • In 1988, the internationalization began with the takeover of Peko Oil, which had mining rights in the Timor Sea , the USA and UK , in 1989 Elf Aquitaine Exploration Australia was added, which also included mining rights in the Timor Sea. This was the first time Santos was active in the offshore sector.
  • In 1993 the production activities of the Australian Gas Light Company were taken over.
  • In 1996 Parker and Parsley Australasia and MIM Petroleum were acquired, giving Santos access to oil fields in Papua New Guinea and Indonesia .
  • In 1999, production rights were acquired in Victoria for the first time .
  • 2001 acquisition of Natural Gas Australia, 2002 of Esenjay Exploration (USA).
  • 2004 drilling rights in were Gulf of Suez , Egypt acquired in 2005 in Kyrgyzstan , in 2006 in Vietnam , 2007 were India and Bangladesh do so.
  • In 2007 the US business was sold.
  • 2010 Start of production on the Henry and Netherby fields in Victoria (offshore)

Business activities

Santos is active in the exploration and production of oil and natural gas. The company has (as of end of 2019) 548 million barrels of oil equivalent ("mmboe") of so-called P1 reserves ( Proven Reserves ) and 989 mmboe P2 reserves (Proven plus Probable Reserves). In 2019, 75 mmboe were funded.

With a production of 30.9 mmboe gas and oil (2019), the oil fields in Western Australia off the Cooper Basin (15.8 mmboe) are the main sources for Santos; other eligible areas are in Queensland and New South Wales (13.0 mmboe), Papua New Guinea (12.8 mmboe) and North Australia and East Timor (3.1 mmboe).

The largest reserves of Santos are in Queensland with 322 mmboe P2 reserves, followed by Western Australia (306 mmboe) and Papua New Guinea (203 mmboe).

2019 on sales of 4.033 billion USD a profit after tax of 674 million USD (565.7 million euros ) was achieved.

Sponsorship

The company appears primarily as a sponsor in Australia. In January 2019, after several years of support, Santos announced that it would be sponsoring the Tour Down Under for another three years . Previously, the company was temporarily the main sponsor of the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra .

Santos Limited is listed on the Australian Stock Exchange and is part of the S & P / ASX 50 index, which comprises the 50 largest companies listed on the Australian Stock Exchange. In 2007, a previously applicable law in South Australia , which limited a shareholder's maximum stake in the company to 15%, was repealed.
