The grant owners had to commit to populating each of these areas with 60 Protestant families within 6 years, building a meeting house, bringing a priest into the community and cultivating 300 acres of land. As early as 1688, two French families settled in this area near the Naskeag Point. The area was permanently settled from 1759 by Andrew Black. The town was organized in 1789 and named after Robert Sedgwick , an early English colonist. Previously the area was known as Naskeag Plantation, also Township No. 5 East of Penobscot River, Livermore Survey (T5 EPR LS) or Township No. 5 West of Union River or Eggemoggin Reach .

Parts of the area were split off in 1817 to create the town of Brooksville. Further parts in 1831 to establish the Town Blue Hill. Port Watson, later renamed Brooklin, was established out of additional territories in 1849 and the town of Penobscot received land in 1859.
