Şəhriyar Hamid oglu Məmmədyarov (alternative Azerbaijani spelling: Şähriyar Mämmädyarov ; born April 12, 1985 in Sumqayıt ) is a world-class Azerbaijani player in chess . Transcription Shakhriyar Mamedyarov , based on the Russified form of the name, has become the international standard and is used in most languages - including by the World Chess Federation FIDE in chess databases and mostly in the German press, where he also as Schakrijar or Schachrijar Mamedyarov to find is.

Life

Məmmədyarov, next to Teymur Rəcəbov an Azerbaijani prodigy in chess , learned the game at the age of eight and took part in his country's national championships in 1999. A year later, he finished second in the same tournament. In the same year, at the age of 15, he won the U18 national championship with 8.5 out of 9. Already this year Məmmədyarov was a member of the national team at the Chess Olympiad in Istanbul (+3 = 2 −0).

In 2001 he proved his skills again by winning the state championship. In 2002 he became European U18 champion. Also in 2002 he played for his country at the Chess Olympiad in Bled . In 2003 he won the Junior World Championship U20, held in Azerbaijani Naxçıvan , with 10 out of 13. In the same year he played in a competition with the Iranian grandmaster Ehsan Ghaem Maghami in Baku in a draw 3: 3 (+1 = 4 −1). In the same year Məmmədyarov took part in the youth world championship U18 in Kallithea (Chalkidiki) and was also world champion in this age category. In 2004 he won the strong Dubai Open . In the first tournament of the FIDE Grand Prix 2012-2013 in London, he shared first place with Wesselin Topalow and Boris Gelfand .

In 2005 he succeeded in winning the U20 World Youth Championship in Istanbul again, an achievement that no one has achieved before him. In July 2008 he managed to take the second place behind Péter Lékó in the super tournament at the Dortmund Chess Days with 4 points from 7 games .

In June 2013 he won the world championship in rapid chess in Khanty-Mansiysk . With five wins in the last five rounds he overtook Jan Nepomnjashchi , who had been the leader for a long time, and won the tournament with 11.5 points from 15 games. Just three weeks later he also won the rapid chess tournament in Geneva , where he prevailed against Vladimir Kramnik in the final .

With 2nd place at the FIDE Grand Prix 2012–2013 , Məmmədyarov qualified for the 2014 Candidates Tournament , in which he finished 4th out of eight participants with 7 out of 14 (+3 = 8 −3).

In 2016, Məmmədyarov succeeded for the first time in winning the top-class Shamkir Chess tournament, which is held in Azerbaijan in memory of the late grandmaster Vugar Gashimov . He got six points from nine games and prevailed in the tie-break against the American Fabiano Caruana .

The local hero succeeded in repeating this triumph at the next edition of Shamkir Chess in 2017. In this case, Grandmaster Məmmədyarov achieved 5.5 out of 9 points to win the tournament.

Məmmədyarov is the brother of Zeinab Məmmədyarova and Türkân Məmmədyarova , both of whom have the title of Grand Master of Women (WGM).

National team

For the national team of Azerbaijan he took part in the Chess Olympiads in 2000 in Istanbul , 2002 in Bled , 2004 in Calvià , 2008 in Dresden , 2010 in Khanty-Mansiysk , 2012 in Istanbul and 2014 in Tromsø . He also took part in the World Team Championships in 2010 and 2011 (and achieved the best individual result on the fourth board in 2010) and the European Team Championships in 2001, 2003, 2005, 2007, 2009, 2011 , 2013, 2015 and 2017. With the team he won in 2009 and 2013 and came second in 2011 and third in 2007; In the individual ranking he achieved the best result on the fourth board in 2009 and on the third board in 2011. At the 2017 European Team Championship, Azerbaijan won the tournament, led by Məmmədyarov on the top board, who was used in eight new games and scored 5 points. In round 8 he won with the black pieces against the Russian grandmaster Alexander Grischuk and thus contributed significantly to the decisive victory of his team against the Russians, who ended up second.

In Azerbaijan, Məmmədyarov plays for SOCAR Baku , with whom he won the European Club Cup in 2012 and 2014 . In the German Federal Chess League he played for SV Werder Bremen from 2008 to 2010 .
