Alan Shatter

Alan Shatter (born February 1, 1951 ) is an Irish politician ( Fine Gael ) and was Ireland's Justice and Defense Minister from March 2011 to May 2014 .

At the age of four, Shatter moved from Rathgar to Rathfarnham with his parents . There he spent the next 35 years. He attended Rathgar National School and then the local high school . After finishing school he studied law at Trinity College Dublin and attended the Europa Instituut at the University of Amsterdam , where he studied European law , political science and economics .

In 1976 he was admitted as a solicitor . A year later, in 1977, he became a partner in the newly formed law firm Gallagher Shatter . Shatter is one of the few solicitors to have served in both the High Court and the Supreme Court of Ireland.

In 1981 he was elected for the first time for the Fine Gael in the constituency of Dublin South in the Dáil Éireann and belonged to this, due to several successful re-elections, until 2002. In 2007 Shatter was re-elected to the Dáil Éireann. After his re-election in February 2011, he became Minister of Justice and Defense in the cabinet of Taoiseach Enda Kenny in March 2011 . He resigned on May 7, 2014 after weeks of discussions about maladministration in the Irish police force. His successor as Minister of Justice was the previous Minister for Children and Youth Affairs, Frances Fitzgerald , while the Ministry of Defense was assigned to the Prime Minister.

Shatter is married with two children. He lives with his family in Ballinteer .
