The Mittelieg-Bergland is a low mountain range up to 480  m high on both sides of the Sieg between Betzdorf and Hennef at the interface of the federal states of North Rhine-Westphalia and Rhineland-Palatinate . In the natural spatial order according to Meynen , the Mittelieg-Bergland represents the main unit 330 within the Süderbergland (main unit group 33).

The mountainous region narrowing to the west in the shape of a wedge to the Cologne Bay flows over to the east into the historic Siegerland , where it is replaced by the natural landscape , which it resembles in relief .

Natural structure

The Mittelieg-Bergland is structured as follows:

Southern Mittelieg-Bergland

The southern Mittelieg-Bergland , also known as the Siegerwesterwald , is a mountainous region that roofs over the Westerwald to the northwest and narrows to the west, to the left of the Sieg from below Betzdorf to above Hennef . It is divided into the Nisterbergland along the lower reaches of the Elbbach and Nister with the well-known Kroppacher Schweiz in the east and the Leuscheid, which forms the watershed between Sieg and Wied , in the west. While the Nisterbergland lies entirely in Rhineland-Palatinate , the state border with North Rhine-Westphalia runs over the Leuscheid .

The Nisterbergland rises significantly in elevation to the southeast towards the High Westerwald , while the Leuscheid, which adjoins it to the west, forms an independent focus of altitude to the north and south.

Mitteliegtal

The Mitteliegtal is the valley of the Sieg from below Betzdorf to above Hennef . Its east up to and including Hamm is in the Altenkirchen district , Rhineland-Palatinate , the west in the Rhein-Sieg district , North Rhine-Westphalia .

The Mitteliegtal is a winding Kastental , whose turns of z. Partly rocky steep slopes are limited on the outside, while the partly loess-covered inner sides rise rather gently and in terraces .

The surface of the Sieg falls in the course of the Mitteliegtal from 180 to about 70 m above sea level, whereby the valley floor in the central and eastern part is up to 20 m lower, while the valley edges go up to almost 300 m.

The valley slopes are wooded, with oak and hornbeam typical of the Siegerland coppice forest in Haubergen . On the other hand, there is agricultural land on the terraces, and on the valley floor mainly grassland and less arable land.

Northern Mittelieg-Bergland

The northern Mittelieg-Bergland is a wedge-shaped narrowing mountain region to the right of the Sieg from below Betzdorf to above Hennef . It is divided into the Morsbacher Bergland in the east and the Nutscheid in the west. While the Nutscheid lies entirely in North Rhine-Westphalia, the border with the Rhineland-Palatinate Wildenburger Land runs over the Morsbacher Bergland .

The northern Mittelieg-Bergland continues the ridge of the Oberbigge plateau or the southern Sauerland Rothaarvorhöhen to the southwest, but appears comparatively independent. The ridge of the ridge is clearly to the northwest, in the immediate vicinity of the adjoining landscapes of Wiehl-Bergland and Bröl plateau . The streams and rivers run from this ridge mainly to the south. Rivers and streams with a source in the Morsbacher Bergland either leave the landscape soon - such as B. Bröl , Waldbrölbach and Löcherbach - or run completely within it.

The Waldbrölbach and the lower reaches of the Bröl form roughly the (external) north-western border of the mountainous region.

The Bröl, like its tributary Waldbrölbach , has its source in the Morsbacher Bergland, but runs almost entirely in the external units Wiehl-Bergland and Brölhochfläche , with Waldbrölbach and lower reaches of the Bröl running close to the border. The Hanfbach rises opposite, near the western edge of the Leuscheid, but runs right up to the confluence in the Pleiser Hügelland .

In the far east of the Morsbacher Bergland, some brooks spring from the system of the Asdorf already in Siegerland, such as B. the Löcherbach , which however soon leave the natural area.

River system of the Wied

On the southern slope of the Leuscheid there are also some rivers that drain the Wied , especially (from east to west):

  • Erbach (7.9 km, 33.2 km²)
    • Driescheiderbach (5.6 km, 8.9 km²)
  • Ölfenerbach (6.7 km, 8.0 km² - just outside)
  • Hemmelzerbach (6.2 km, 11.9 km²)
  • Mehrbach (22.9 km, 65.9 km²)
  • Pfaffenbach (20.6 km, 62.8 km²)
