Sorrento is a town in Hancock County in the state of Maine in the United States . In 2010, 274 people lived there in 141 households on an area of 36.54 km².

According to the United States Census Bureau , Sorrento has a total area of 36.54 km², of which 10.33 km² is land and 26.21 km² consists of water .
Geographical location
Sorrento is located on a headland in the south of Hancock County on Frenchman Bay on the Atlantic Ocean . Several smaller lakes are scattered over the area of the town. The surface is flat, without any significant elevations. Several islands belong to the area of the town. The best known are Calf Island , Preble Island, and Treasure Island .

history
Until the independent organization of the Town of Sorrento on March 3, 1895, the area belonged to the Town of Sullivan. Settlement in this area began as early as 1762. At the end of the 19th century, attempts were made to make Sorrento popular as a holiday resort. The Hotel Sorrento was built in 1889 on Frenchmans Bay. It burned out in 1906. There has been a public 9-hole golf course on Sorrento since 1916.

The US Highway 1 directly on the northern border of the Town from west to east along. The Maine State Route 185 branches off from it in a southerly direction .
Public facilities
There are no medical institutions or hospitals in Sorrento. The closest are in Ellsworth and Bar Harbor.
The Sorrento Library was built in 1893. In 1995 it was listed as a historic monument and entered on the National Register of Historic Places under register no. 13000187 added.

Sorrento belongs to RSU 24 with Eastbrook, Franklin, Gouldsboro, Prospect Harbor, Steuben, Sullivan, Sumner and Winter Harbor.
