About this picture

Speicher is a town near the Kyll in the Eifelkreis Bitburg-Prüm in Rhineland-Palatinate and the administrative seat of the association of the same name . According to state planning, the storage facility is designated as a basic center.

geography

Speicher is located in the natural and cultural landscape of the southern Eifel not far from Bitburg . The city is located 20 kilometers north of Trier and 19 kilometers west of the district town of Wittlich (both as the crow flies ).

Speicher also includes the residential areas at Speicher, Bermeshausen, Commeshof, Laymühle, Schalfelderhof and Speicherermühle.

history

Speicher 834 is mentioned for the first time in a document as madabodi spicarium (spicarium from Latin spica = ear of corn), 1136 the name Spichera appears in a document. Ancient finds in the Speicherer Wald, which are of Roman origin, however, suggest that Speicher is even older. Speicher had been under Luxembourg sovereignty since 1354 and was part of the rulership of Bruch . In 1815 Speicher was added to the Kingdom of Prussia .

The Romans are responsible for the development of a pottery industry that flourished towards the end of the first and the beginning of the second century AD, and which has survived as a domestic industry to the present day. Numerous ovens and pottery finds unearthed in the Speicherer Forest bear witness to the extensive production of pottery and bricks up to the 5th century. From the early 14th century, Speicher pottery masters began producing Speicher stoneware that has been produced up to the modern era. The pottery was offered for sale by merchants in the traveling trade all over Germany and beyond in neighboring countries.

The municipality of Speicher was elevated to a town on May 8, 2011.

religion

Historically, Speicher, like almost all of the Eifel, has been Catholic; 76.8% of the residents are Catholic, 9.9% Protestant, the remaining 13.3% other or without religion. For many centuries the city was part of the Archbishopric and Electorate of Trier , an important spiritual territory in the Holy Roman Empire , whose archbishop was traditionally one of the seven electors . In particular because of the empire's claim to holiness, it was unacceptable that individual regions should turn away from the old Roman church. Renewal movements such as the Reformation were never able to gain a foothold in the Trier region and thus also within Speicher. Central church of the parish St. Philippus u. Jakobus ( Diocese of Trier ) is the parish church of the same name , built in 1896 in neo-Gothic style , which with its high tower still dominates the townscape today. Nevertheless, there is also a church of the Protestant parish of Bitburg in Speicher.

coat of arms

Coat of arms of Speicher
Blazon : “In black a curled red tip, inside a growing golden ear; in front a golden jug, behind a golden potter's wheel. "
Justification of the coat of arms: With the symbols of the jug and potter's wheel, the municipal coat of arms indicates the extraordinary importance of the ceramics industry in the Speicher area, which dates back to Roman times. Pottery manufacturing flourished again in the 14th century. Around 1485 a brotherhood of jug bakers was founded. The ear is an indication of the original form of the place name "Spicarium" which goes back to (Latin) spica = the ear.

language

Speicherer motto: Wat me geen, dat geema gär, äwa ma geen neist. (What we give, we like to give, but we don't give anything)

The native language of the Speicherer is Moselle Franconian in its locally colored way. There are small but subtle differences to the Moselle Franconian of the neighboring communities. The typical example of this is the "real" for the number eight, which is translated by the neighboring communities as "aacht". For example, while one goes “oabichten” (work) in Herforst, the storers go “create”.

Just as the Luxembourgish Moselle Franconian is peppered with a multitude of French terms, the Speicherer is interspersed with Yenish expressions, which can be traced back to the tradition of the outpatient traders. Example: Den Houtz miaz. (The man doesn't understand.)
