The Catholic parish church of St. Laurentius in Eschringen

The St. Laurentius Church is a Catholic parish church in Eschringen , a district of the Saarland state capital Saarbrücken . The patron saint of the church is St. Lawrence . In the list of monuments of the Saarland, the church is a single monument listed.

The parish of St. Laurentius and the parish of St. Peter in neighboring Ensheim belong to the Speyer diocese , all other parishes in the city of Saarbrücken belong to the Trier diocese . This is due to the territorial and administrative reform in Saarland in 1974 , when Eschringen and Ensheim were spun off from the then St. Ingbert district , whose parishes belong to the Speyr diocese, and added to the city of Saarbrücken.

history

In 1898 a church building association was founded in Eschringen , which collected the sum of 55,765 marks by 1921 . But the inflation in the early 1920s completely devalued the assets. But there was a fresh start and after the currency conversion in the Saar area at that time , which was economically and politically dependent on France , 12,000 francs were collected. In 1926 the church received the building site as a gift from the political community of Eschringen. On April 1st, 1929 the foundation stone was laid by the Speyer bishop Ludwig Sebastian . The plans for the church came from Saarbrücken architect Peter Weiß, the Dutch company from Ormesheim carried out the construction work. The consecration of the church could be celebrated on June 22, 1930. During the Second World War , the church was severely damaged several times and restored between 1947 and 1949 , with structural changes inside. In 1960, St. Laurentius parish church became its own parish in Eschring . Between 1965 and 1967 the chancel was rebuilt.

The inside of the church

In the course of time the interior of the church was changed several times, whereby the overall character of the church changed completely. Originally the high altar , communion bench and pulpit were made of white stucco . On the base of the altar was a painting based on Leonardo da Vinci's Last Supper . Under a canopy in the center stood a cross, flanked by adoring angels . There was a wall painting on the arch that separated the choir from the nave . The church windows showed colorful figurative representations. In 1932 the church received a simple way of the cross in the form of 14 wooden crosses.

Due to the severe damage in the Second World War, the interior of the church was subjected to a considerable redesign from 1947, the design of which came from Albert Boßlet . The destroyed colorful windows were replaced by panes made up of single-colored rectangles in yellow and purple tones. Three windows and arches in the chancel were bricked up, and the high altar was now made simpler. Above the high altar one was in June 1952 Crucifixion of art workshops bird ( Bergzabern ) attached, the large wooden cross, flanked by figures of Mary and the apostle John , since then dominates the church. The figures come from Helmuth Müller from St. Avold , who also created the figures of the two side altars , an Antonius relief , a Laurentius figure and the new Way of the Cross. The reason why a French artist was given the order for the furnishings was that the Saarland was economically connected to France until 1957 and there were no problems with import duties , as with the altars and bells . The stucco pulpit and choir screen were replaced by wooden works from the Vogel art workshop . A war victims memorial has been set up in a small chapel to the left of the entrance .

After the Second Vatican Council , the interior was redesigned again in 1965/66 and thus adapted to the renewed liturgy . An altar table clad in green marble was placed in the center of the chancel and the floors of the corridors and choir, as well as the stairs, were given light marble slabs instead of ceramic tiles . The wooden floor under the pews was replaced by dark screed .

The exterior of the church

The church building was influenced by the neo-Romanesque style and made of sandstone . The nave has six window axes . The steeple having a hood made of copper , the baroque anmutet. The roofs of the choir and the sacristy are also covered with copper . The roof of the nave with bricks covered.

Bells

The bell tower currently houses three bronze bells as a classic Te Deum motif by Hermann Hamm from Frankenthal, which was cast in 1950. For reasons of tower statics, they hang on cranked steel yokes.
