City Court of Giessen
The City Court casting was from 1821 to 1879, a first instance court of general jurisdiction , based in Giessen in the province of Upper Hesse of the Grand Duchy of Hesse .
designation
The courts of first instance in the provinces of Upper Hesse and Starkenburg of the Grand Duchy of Hesse were usually called “ Landgericht ” from 1821 to 1879 , while those responsible for the cities of Gießen and Darmstadt were called “City Court” - without this having any effect on their factual or instanced Had jurisdiction.
founding
From 1821 onwards, the Grand Duchy of Hesse separated jurisdiction from administration on the lower level .
In the area of Gießen and its surrounding area, the administrative tasks were transferred to the district of Gießen , the tasks of jurisdiction to the city court of Gießen and the district court of Gießen , which had equal jurisdiction in terms of instance and subject matter, but had different court districts . The higher court responsible for the Giessen City Court was the Giessen Court Court .

Further development
On April 1, 1827, a number of places from the district of the Giessen Regional Court were added to the district of the Giessen City Court (see: Overview).
On July 1, 1840, Pohl-Göns and Kirch-Göns were spun off from the Gießen judicial district and assigned to the district of the newly established Butzbach Regional Court .
On October 15, 1853, responsibility for the town of Hermannstein was transferred from the Gießen regional court to the Gießen municipal court.
After the lost war of 1866 , the Grand Duchy of Hesse had to cede areas in western Upper Hesse to Prussia in the peace treaty of September 3, 1866 . Municipalities from the district of the Giessen City Court were also included (see overview). In order to compensate for the resulting imbalance in the district scope, on January 20, 1867, the district court of Gießen subordinated some communities to the city court of Gießen (see: Overview).
The End
With the Courts Constitution Act of 1877, the organization and names of the courts were standardized across the empire . On October 1, 1879, the Grand Duchy of Hesse therefore repealed the regional courts. Functionally, they have been replaced by local courts . So now the district court of Gießen replaced the city court of Gießen (as well as the previous district court of Gießen). The higher courts directly superordinate to the local courts were now called “ regional courts ”. The district court Gießen was assigned to the district of the regional court Gießen .
